Principal Message
Good Afternoon Findley Families,
I hope you are all enjoying the start to your long weekend. We are busy conferencing and preparing for the next few weeks of teaching and learning. As we head into the holiday/school break season please make sure you are checking our website frequently for current events and goings on. We get very busy this time of year and we wouldn’t want anyone to miss out!
Thank you to all the parents who came to our first Parent Partnership Series session. Those in attendance learned about the Zones of Regulation and Calming Corners. We shared about the language we use here in school to talk with students about their emotions and strategies to use at home in helping students self-regulate. Watch for more information to come regarding the session in our series.
There’s a lot of information covered this week…happy reading!
Sherry Marsh, Ed.D.
Principal
It’s time for Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB).
This is a friendly competition for the 3rd, 4th & 5th graders to participate in! Each year this event is coordinated by the Oregon Association of Librarians; this is the largest Book Club in the state and is designed to promote reading! There are 16 books chosen state wide, the students compete first at Findley and then the winning team competes at Regionals (against other public & private schools from the Washington County area). If the team wins at Regionals they go on to compete at the State level. The students do not have to read all 16 books; the books can be read by the student, read to the student by a family member, or listened to audibly. This is a fun way to introduce new books and series to your child!
This is a student driven activity, the students create their own team of 4 members from their grade level, they read the books and compete in friendly battles. All battles happen during the grade level recesses and begin in late January. The program has been introduced to your children during their library time and many students are already anxiously reading and creating teams. Registration for this event is Wednesday, November 13th, during their lunches; at this time the teams will turn in signed contracts and have their pictures taken. Please talk to your child about their interest in the program, it is completely voluntary and an extra curricular activity.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

TAG Update
COGAT screener scores for 3rd and 5th grade students can now be viewed in ParentVue. If your child scored a 97% or above they will automatically be scheduled to take the rest of the COGAT test during our TAG testing week, November 18th-22nd.
Parent permission forms for the COGAT test will be coming from the district, please return them to the school as soon as you can. We understand that they put a deadline of this week, but since we have conferences, the beginning of next week is fine.
If you have two children, that took the test and received an email from the district, email me and I can let you know which child it pertains too.
You may also receive a parent permission form for ITBS testing from the school which also needs to be returned quickly.
The schedule for testing will be sent out when it is ready via your teacher and will occur on several different days. The test will be given in sections on different days.
The best thing your child can do to prepare is to get lots of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast and lunch.
Thanks,
Shannon Bauck TAG Facilitator
Report Cards Are Going Paperless
The Beaverton School District is transitioning to electronic report cards for all students. This upcoming Progress period will be the last time we will be printing and mailing paper progress reports/report cards. The electronic report cards will be accessed through ParentVUE (mobile and desktop). If parents/guardians have not set up their ParentVUE account, they will need to do so by January 2020.
There are resources and guidance on how to set up a ParentVue account. Please view the FAQ for instructions on setting up an account.
There are several benefits to moving to paperless report cards. Families will be able to view grades days after grading days, rather than wait up to two weeks for a report card to come by mail or in their child’s backpack. In addition, moving away from paper is environmentally friendly and cost-effective for the District.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to contact the school for assistance with a printed copy of the ParentVue access information.
Public Health Message
-
Norovirus is sometimes called the “stomach flu.” It is a virus that is easily passed person-to-person, by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, or from contaminated food or water.
Symptoms of norovirus usually start suddenly and include:
• Diarrhea
-
Nausea and vomiting
-
Stomach pain
-
Fever, headache, body aches
You can feel very sick and throw up or have diarrhea many times a day. This usually lasts 1-2 days. Illness can cause dehydration, especially in young children. If they become dehydrated, children may cry with few or no tears, urinate less and be unusually sleepy or fussy. Consult your health care provider for symptoms that are severe or if you are worried about dehydration.
Prevention:
There is no vaccine for norovirus. These steps are important in minimizing spread of norovirus in schools:
-
-
The single best way to prevent getting norovirus is to practice good handwashing with soap and water. It’s
especially important to wash hands after using the bathroom and before preparing or eating food.
-
Stay home/keep kids home if sick.
Please review your family’s immunization history to make sure you are all up to date. Vaccines are one of the best ways to protect your family from a variety of diseases. They also can decrease the spread of diseases in our schools.
