The New Teach Too Framework
Professional community of practice
In his introduction to It’s About Work, Sir Frank McLoughlin, wrote: “the best provision is collaborative in nature… It is about relationships not structures, joint responsibility not just vertical accountability.” Phases 1-3 of Teach Too provided many examples of effective practice. Phase 4 resulted in the development of a Teach Too Framework that supersedes the earlier Phase 1 version.
A tool for providers
Now in Phase 5, as the implementation of the technical reforms becomes closer, we have tweaked this useful tool for all partners and participants in Teach Too activity. The new framework builds on Teach Too principles through the linked themes of Collaboration, Curriculum, Professionalism and Leadership. The framework reflects how the Teach Too approach provides an effective preparation for the introduction of T-levels. Looking forward, the framework also identifies key features that support the sustainability of Teach Too practice.
Collaboration, Curriculum, Professionalism, and Leadership
The framework provides examples of how the four themes can be mapped against effective practice. There is a much greater emphasis on the potential for Teach Too approaches to contribute to local skills needs and progression pathways. The Gatsby Foundation’s work on Good Career Guidance is an important aspect of the work as is the Collab Group’s thinkpiece on the future landscape for Technical and Professional Education.
The four themes of Collaboration, Curriculum, Professionalism, and Leadership will be explored in depth in the coming months.
- During October, we will focus on collaboration. Teach Too projects work with a range of employers and Local Enterprise Partnerships. Collaborative partnerships need to take account of technical and vocational education for adults, retraining opportunities alongside progression pathways. We shall showcase examples of how this is being done.
- In November, our curriculum theme will highlight the importance of a learner-centred approach as well as the need for a shared language accessible to employers, providers and learners. Another key aspect is updating the curriculum so that it remains relevant to current workplaces.
- In December, our focus on professionalism will cover the role and development of dual professionals, ETF’s standards for Teachers and Trainers, ‘masterclasses’ and ‘master technicians’, and Advanced Teacher Status.
- In January our focus on leadership will stress the importance of ownership at senior levels of organisations evident in our whole-organisation projects. A key element to date has been supporting employers and other partners to make sense of the changing landscape of educational reforms. Our blogs will highlight how Teach Too projects developed employer capacity to understand the apprenticeship reforms in particular and therefore engage with national priorities. Another key aspect will be workforce retention and recruitment, where leaders need to address salary mismatches between teachers and those working in industry.
