November Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Native American Heritage Month
In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Recognizing diversity facilitates our collective ability to support each and every student and family regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, physical ability, cognitive ability, background, personality, and more.
Diversity presents the opportunity for critical thinking to occur through exposure to different viewpoints, life experiences, and beliefs allowing us to explore and examine our world. Check out this article communicating the benefits of inclusion and diversity in the classroom.
Native American Heritage Month was first recognized in 1990 after approval of a resolution by President George H. W. Bush. Since then proclamations have been made each November under various names including National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.
For more information on recognitions throughout the year please check out this link from pta.org.
"Diversity is a fact. Equity is a choice. Inclusion is an action. Belonging is an outcome". ~ Arthur Chan

Student immunization record system changing
Snohomish School District is changing how we manage student immunization records. We are now using School Module, an online system provided by the Washington State Department of Health. The School Module allows us to quickly and efficiently check if your child has the vaccines required for school. This will save us time on finding and entering vaccination dates and free up time to work with students. Most children born and/or vaccinated in Washington already have their information in the system. You can access your child’s record at any time by signing up for MyIR at https://wa.myir.net/register. As we move to this system, the school nurse may ask you for more information about your child’s vaccination history. If your child is missing vaccines in the system, we may ask for a copy of their immunization record. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your school nurse.
Qualifying students guaranteed admission to five colleges
Qualifying Snohomish School District seniors will receive guaranteed admission to five Washington colleges and universities through the Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program (GAP). Snohomish School District is one of 63 districts participating in the GAP this school year. Participating colleges and universities are:
- Central Washington University (www.cwu.edu)
- Eastern Washington University (www.ewu.edu)
- The Evergreen State College (www.evergreen.edu)
- Washington State University (https://wsu.edu/)
- Western Washington University (www.wwu.edu)
To be eligible for guaranteed admission to the five participating institutions, students must have or be on track to:
- Earn by graduation a 3.0 GPA, and
- Complete the college academic distribution requirement (CADR) coursework, and
- Release their contact information to higher education institutions. To release your student’s information for purposes of higher education usage, the parent/guardian should let us know their intent by completing a Higher Education Verification Form in Skyward/Family Access. This step should only take a minute and must be completed by Friday, November 18. (PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DEADLINE. THIS DEADLINE WAS PREVIOUSLY ONE WEEK LATER.) Parents/guardians who do not complete the form will be opted in to the release of information to higher education. Click here for a one-page sheet on how to complete this process.
College admissions staff will reach out to qualifying students by email beginning in December. Students must complete the application process and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA).
Contact your high school College & Career Center for more information about:
- The Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program (GAP)
- FAFSA and WASFA
- Post-high school planning in general (including two-year college, technical school, apprenticeship and/or or military service)

Inclement weather info for families
If inclement weather conditions occur during the evening, the district office will decide whether to:
- Hold school (regular hours)
- Hold school (delayed start) - All schools will start two hours late
- Close school
- Learn more at www.sno.wednet.edu/weather
In the event that our schools are closed or are starting late:
- Automated phone calls and emails are sent to all district families through the School Messenger system (the system is automatically populated with the primary phone numbers and email addresses available in the Skyward/Family Access system).
- A notice is posted on the district Facebook page at www.facebook.com/snohomishschooldistrict
- A notice is placed on the district website at www.sno.wednet.edu
- Local television and radio stations are notified.
- Emails are sent through our listserv newsletter subscription system.
- A notice is sent to the statewide public emergency notification system - www.flashalertseattle.net
Because we know many are getting ready for school or leaving early, we try to get these notifications out to our school community between 5:15-5:45 a.m. If we are fully certain of the situation the evening in advance, we will let our families know at that time. If Snohomish is not mentioned during the newscasts, through School Messenger or on our website, you will know our schools are open and buses are operating on or near the normal schedule.
If there is a two-hour delayed start, the following will apply:
- All regular full-day classes will be held (beginning two hours later than normal).
- No a.m. and/or p.m. half-day special education preschool, or ECEAP.
AIM High School’s morning session will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and the afternoon session from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- No morning elementary band.
- No zero-hour classes.
- No morning Sno-Isle Technical Skills Center.
- No out-of-district transportation.
- Buses may be on normal routes or limited transportation routes (decision will remain in effect for the entire day).
- Note: If there is inclement weather on any Friday and a two-hour delayed start is decided, please note the following:
- Schools will start two hours after usual starting times.
- Schools will dismiss at their regular (Monday through Thursday) dismissal times and not the regular Friday two-hour early release times.
Please note: If school has been closed for the day, there will be no district busing or transportation available. All outside facility use, evening meetings or functions scheduled to take place in district facilities will be cancelled. A decision will be made by noon on the impacted day regarding the possibility of afternoon district- and school-sponsored activities and practices.
If school is in session and weather worsens during the day, the district office will make the decision whether or not to close school and will notify the schools. This will occur only if there is an emergency, such as a localized disaster or widespread extreme weather conditions. If a school closure occurs in the middle of the day, secondary schools will dismiss students so that most will arrive home before elementary students. Elementary students will be dismissed at the regular time. Parents/guardians need to have an alternate plan for their child(ren). Make certain they know what they are to do and/or where they should go if parents cannot get home due to weather conditions.
Limited transportation information:
When weather conditions dictate that certain roads are not safely passable, the district will announce it is providing limited transportation. The district's 2022-2023 limited transportation routes and schedules will be available and shared with families by mid- to late-November. Each school office also has a list of the roads/areas that our buses will not travel on when limited transportation is in effect. Please remember, limited transportation will be in effect for both the morning and afternoon routes, even if roads have cleared during the day.

School & district news
- School newsletters - If you would like to receive Dear Friends and other district and school newsletters, or if you have a high school student who wants to receive the school Daily Bulletin, you must subscribe to our listserv subscription tool. For directions on how to subscribe or change your subscription preferences (for those already signed up), please click here.
- Dear Friends - Looking for back issues of our Dear Friends enews? Visit www.sno.wednet.edu/dearfriends.
- Facebook - Today, 11,000 Facebook fans receive regular district updates through our district's Facebook page - www.facebook.com/snohomishschooldistrict. This site is just one of many ways we communicate with our students, staff, families and community. Although we are aware of other Facebook pages, please note that this is the only verified Facebook page of the Snohomish School District and is where official information is posted.
- School Messenger - Our district uses the School Messenger automated system as a tool for communication with our parents, families and staff. School Messenger works with the district’s student-data system (Skyward/Family Access) to notify families and staff through phone and/or email of emergencies, critical school and district messages, school/district closures, inclement weather, attendance issues, underfunded student meal accounts and other events/activities. The overall goal of using this service is for parents and families to receive critical information about Snohomish schools - especially information that affects their children - in a timely manner. As long as we have accurate primary phone numbers and email addresses on record for our students in Skyward/Family Access, families should automatically receive these messages when they are sent out.
