Principal's Post
We are excited to announce our upcoming Parent Academy sessions at Royal Oaks! Our staff is hosting three after school sessions that we believe will be beneficial to families. The Parent Academies will be on March 18th, April 15th, and May 20th from 4:30-6:00. Parents are welcome to bring their children along! Families will be able to select and attend a session or two that is relevant to their needs with options such as Helping Your Child Become a Stronger Reader, Helping Your Child Become a Better Mathematician, Positive Parenting, Rockin' Homework Help, End of Grade Testing Strategies, and Avoiding the Summer Slide. Snacks will be provided for the event and we hope you will mark your calendars and plan to attend. Building a strong home-school partnership is an important part of our overall mission.
“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.”-Jane D. Hull
Sincerely,
Melody Marsh
EOG Proctors Needed
Each year, our 3rd through 5th graders participate in state standardized tests called End of Grade (EOGs). In order to run these tests successfully, we require proctors to assist the teachers throughout the testing session.
Please consider volunteering to proctor with our EOGs at the end of the year.
This year, we will have our EOGs on:
- Tuesday, June 4th (ELA)
- Thursday, June 6th (Math)
- Monday, June 10th (5th Science and 3rd grade Read to Achieve)
If you are able to help, please visit: https://goo.gl/forms/Oigof1a4cC9kTwk53
Proctor Training Information can be found here.
Curriculum At A Glance
- In reading, students will break apart words as they decode, using suffixes and prefixes to help them read larger words. Students will also ask themselves "Does this word make sense? Does it look right? Does it sound right?" when decoding unfamiliar words.
- In math, students will begin solving word problems using part-part-whole visuals and manipulative to help make sense of addition situations. Students will also begin to decompose and compare quantities up to 10.
First Grade:
- In reading, students will identify character traits using familiar book series. They will also compare and contrast the same main character in two different books within a series.
- In math, students will create fractions (halves, thirds, and fourths) within multiple shapes. Students will also begin telling time to the hour and half hour.

Students will also describe the main characters within their biographies, focusing on what challenges they faced, how they overcame challenges, and identifying the point of view of the author.
- In math, students will solve word problems involving area and perimeter. Students will begin their work with fractions-focusing on identifying fraction units with denominators of 2,3,4,6, and 8 with number lines, visual models, and area models.

Students will also read multiple accounts of the same topic and determine the author's point of view and how their perspective affects the way the text is presented.
