Writing Into Our Many Bodies:
Narratives of Diaspora and Home
October 11, 7:30 PM
Jonsson Performance Hall (JO 2.604) in the Erik Jonsson Academic Center (JO) at UT Dallas
We invite you to attend a lecture and reading by the Jewish Book Award-winning author Jai Chakrabarti. His fiction and short stories find shared meaning in and weave together Indian and Jewish experience.
The novelist /essayist Martha Ann Toll said of his debut novel:
“Written in lyrical prose, A Play for the End of the World is a love story that knits together a Warsaw Ghetto survivor with a play by Rabindranath Tagore. Chakrabarti’s debut novel explores Nazi horrors; the deracination experienced by refugees; and oppressive, deadly politics in India; all set against a tender and improbable love affair. Anchoring the story is Tagore’s play, The Post Office, put on by children in the Warsaw Ghetto under the care of a humanitarian hero, Janusz Korczak. Korczak was a Jewish Polish physician and educator who declined to save himself and went to his death with the children in his care.”
Of his new collection of short stories, A Small Sacrifice for an Enormous Happiness, the New York Times review states, “The first story in Jai Chakrabarti’s exquisite collection is hard to top…As impeccable as that title story is, every entry astonishes.”
Chakrabarti’s appearance is jointly sponsored by:
The Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies
The Crow Museum of Asian Art
US-India Chamber of Commerce
Parking & Directions
For non-affiliated UTD visitors, please download and print the attached parking permit beforehand so that you can display it on your dashboard when parking. The permit is valid for any orange space on campus, and since it is the second-highest level (purple being the highest), you have the option to park on any gold or green spaces if orange spaces happen to be full.
Parking Structure 3 (PS3) will be the closest parking area to the JO building, and orange spaces start on the second floor of PS3.
Parking Structure 3/Blackstone Launchpad
2830 Rutford Ave
Richardson, TX 75080
The JO building is about a 5 - 10 minute walk from PS3, and two Comet Cabs will also be available from 6:30 - 10:00 PM to help those with physical disabilities or limitations (including wheelchair users) get to and from the venue. Below is an image of the garage in relation to the JO building:
When you walk out of PS3, head down the walkway (going away from the street) towards the heart of campus. As you approach the Science Building (SCI) on your right (modern building with thin rectangular windows and an outdoor area), the JO building (older building) will be to your left.
