Salem Public Schools - Weekly Update
November 17, 2023
Superintendent's Message
SPS families,
As we approach a short week, on behalf of Salem Public Schools, I wish you a healthy and happy Thanksgiving! To all who celebrate, I hope you will enjoy your special family traditions or maybe start a new one!
Last night, I had the opportunity to attend Collins’ Thanksgiving feast, a long-standing tradition that had a brief hiatus during COVID. It was such a powerful example of community as students, staff and caregivers bonded over a delicious meal, laughter and joyful conversation. There was such a positive energy and feeling in the room with so many contributing to celebrate all that is good in the community. The event reminded me how grateful I am to be part of such a welcoming and caring school district. We appreciate your partnership, participation and encouragement of our students and staff. Thank you!
Our football team has two important games - tonight’s semi-final playoff game against Stoneham in Lynn (Manning Field) at 6 p.m. and the Thanksgiving game against Beverly at 10 a.m. (Hurd Stadium in Beverly). Come show your support for these student-athletes!
Additionally, our Salem High School Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony is back! The event will take place Tuesday, Nov. 21 at Salem State University’s Veterans Hall (Tickets can be purchased here). Congratulations to our 11 inductees!.
Finally, please remember that we will operate on an early release schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 22. Also, note that our next newsletter will be distributed on Friday, Dec. 1.
Enjoy the holiday week,
Steve
And the rockstar award winner is.....
At Salem Public Schools, we are recognizing one staff member a week who exemplifies our core values of celebrating differences, facilitating collaboration, fostering innovation, creating equity and access, growing all students, and upholding high standards for all. We are surprising a deserving SPS team member with a rock star trophy.
This week's rockstar is Ms. Angiulo, paraprofessional at the ECC. This is her first year and she brings a positive attitude that is a welcome addition to any classroom. Ms. Angiulo is flexible, willing to change assignments for a day or at any moment - she is always willing to support where the need exists. Ms, Angiulo also demonstrates great empathy for the students she works with, always putting them at the center. Her positive attitude and flexible demeanor mark the definition of being a team player!
Thursday’s CTE Advisory Board Meeting at the Black Cat Cafe, facilitated by CTE Director Mario Sousa, offered roughly 80 guests – area business representatives and partners, SHS alumni, educators, and CTE students – the CTE program’s progress, lofty future plans and a tour of facilities.
The first Salem Public Schools Multilingual Learner (ML) Family Night Salem Public Schools took place Wednesday, Nov. 15 at the Saltonstall School and drew 100 guests.
A Message from Our Nurses
We are excited to announce the upcoming COVID-19 vaccine clinics organized by the North Shore Public Health Collaborative. These clinics will provide access to COVID-19 vaccines for individuals aged 12 and up. Getting vaccinated is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your loved ones, and our community against the ongoing threat of COVID-19. Your active participation in this vaccine clinic contributes significantly to the collective well-being of our community.
Individuals must register ahead of time using this link. Please view the schedule at the North Shore Public Health Collaborative website to find a date and time that works for you. The Salem clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, November 29th from 1-3 PM at the Community Life Center at 401 Bridge Street.
If you are unable to attend one of these clinics, please note that many CVS and Walgreens locations have COVID-19 and flu vaccines in stock. Please visit their scheduling websites at CVS or Walgreens to make an appointment.

Staying Healthy Over the Holidays
With the holiday season around the corner, now is a good time for families, students, and educators to get their COVID-19 and flu vaccinations if they have not already. More information is available on the Department of Public Health’s website.
MAYOR ON THE MOVE!
The Mayor's office is excited to announce that they're piloting a new program: the Mobile Mayor’s Office. The Mayor's office will periodically relocate for a day (or part of a day) to serve the public from beyond the walls of City Hall, striving to remove any barriers residents may face accessing city services.
Next week, is the first Mobile Mayor’s Office program. They will be working at the Espacio Community Room, 105 Congress Street on Wednesday, November 22nd, from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
The office will be accessible by phone, email, and, of course, in person at Espacio. The main office number (978) 619-5600, as well as 5-digit extensions, will forward over to cellphones.
The Salem High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct 11 former athletes, coaches, administrators and dignitaries on Tuesday, Nov. 21 (6 p.m.) at Salem State University’s Veterans Hall. Tickets cost $50 and can be purchased via GoFan.com. The SHS Hall of Fame Class of 2023 drew 28 nominations. The list of inductees includes:

Dowload the ParentSquare App
A reminder that ParentSquare is the district platform for communication. You will receive communication from the district, your school, and your student's classroom all in one space. You can communicate 1-to-1 with teachers, sign up for parent-teacher conferences, and more.
This is the primary communication platform for all Salem Public Schools. All messages and alerts come through ParentSquare and the app makes 1-to-1 communication with your student's teachers and signing up for guardian/student conferences a breeze. If you are not receiving messages from ParentSquare or if you are having trouble, contact your school's front office. You can visit www.parentsquare.com for more information.
