The Patton Post
Friday, September 8th

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Friday, September 8th
I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend and enjoyed the Labor Day break! We have had a wonderful and busy week here at Patton. Our students completed their MAP testing this week and did an amazing job staying focused and trying their best. Make up testing will continue next week for those students who have been absent.
We completed our first Lockdown Drill on Tuesday with the aid of our School Resource Officers, Officer O'Leary and Officer Malik. Everything went well and the students did an amazing job following the instructions. We do have a few more drills coming up this year so please keep reading for more information and dates.
I hope to see some of you at the Kindergarten Family Night this evening - please be sure to bundle up as it looks like the heatwave has well and truly ended!
We are all looking forward to another fun week this week!
Thanks
Ellie Chin

IAR TEST RESULTS (NEW POST!)
This afternoon, our 4th and 5th Grade Panthers brought home the results from the IAR tests they took last year in their backpacks.
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is the state assessment and accountability measure for Illinois students enrolled in a public school district. IAR assesses the Illinois Learning Standards Incorporating the Common Core and will be administered in English language arts and mathematics to all students in grades 3-8. This assessment is typically administered in March, and the results are released during the fall of the following school year. For any families who had 5th graders last year, those scores will be sent home by Thomas Middle School.
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES - OCTOBER 12th & 13th (NEW POST!)
Our Signup Genius link will go live a bit earlier this year to give everyone more time to schedule their conferences. On Sunday, September 17th at 7pm you will receive an email with the signup link where you will be able to select times with your child/ren's teacher(s).
Conferences are always a great way for you to spend some one on one time with your chiild/ren's classroom teacher and to understand how your students are progressing this year.
Please note that school will NOT be in session on these dates.
FIRST GRADE FAMILY NIGHT - Friday, September 15th (NEW POST!)
ABSENCE MATTERS (Updated Post!)
We have definitely seen an increase in absences this past couple of weeks due to the seasonal bugs that like to rear their head at this time of the year! We really want our students to take the time they need to recover when they aren't feeling well but we also want to be proactive about sharing the importance of being in school and that every minute counts.
We are also seeing an uptick in students arriving late. We know sometimes these late arrivals cannot be avoided but, even a few minutes of tardiness can have a big impact on a students day of learning so, we would like to remind everyone that school starts promptly at 9.05am - this is the time we would like all Panthers to be in their seats and ready to start their day. Please try your best to ensure that your children are here iand ready to start their day at 9.05am.
SNACK TIME!
Grades 1 through 5 are allowed to bring in a snack to enjoy during the school day. It is District 25 policy that snacks be limited to a fruit or a vegetable in its own skin. We kindly ask that you please do not send in any crackers, chips, cookies, etc for snack time. These items can be included with their lunch.

PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY (2nd Post!)
We appreciate all of our drivers who have done an excellent job following the arrival and dismissal procedures. We are all adjusting to our new routines with construction this year, and we appreciate everyone’s patience, cooperation, and understanding. We would like to remind everyone to please adhere to traffic signs around the school.
A community member stopped by to share that he has noticed cars exiting our parking lot at a high speed going south on Patton Avenue and ignoring the stop sign that is at Patton Avenue and Maude. He was expressing concern due to the number of walkers and bikers he sees in the neighborhood. Please do note that there is a stop sign and please follow the speed limit. Some of our students and their younger siblings are small and may not be easily visible while you are driving. We have requested the support of the Arlington Heights Police Department to help monitor this area for safety and they have assisted us in putting in a request with the forestry department to trim any trees that may be impacting visibility of the stop sign. Thank you so much for helping to keep all our students safe.
Parents whose children are exiting Door 10, on Patton Avenue. Our crossing guard has shared that some students are choosing to cross in the middle of the street rather than walking to the corner and crossing with the assistance of the crossing guard. Please have a conversation with your children and remind them to cross only at the corner with the crossing guard. There is a huge shortage district-wide of crossing guards and we are very fortunate to have this intersection staffed.
For CAP parents who are dropping off or picking up close to our arrival and dismissal times, please be mindful that our parking lot is drive through only during arrival and dismissal to allow for a steady flow of traffic. Our traffic dismissal line typically finishes around 3:45. At that time we begin walking any remaining students inside to call home and check on their rides.
If you are picking up from CAP after 3:45, you are able to park and exit your vehicle as long as the pick up lane has cleared out. If you need to pick up your child before 3:45, please consider having them exit the building with the other students and picking them up in the car pick up lane. If it is a last-minute change, please know that you can call the front office, and we will relay the message to your child.
CAP Parents should also know that we do not allow access to other parts of our school when you are dropping off and picking up students. For the safety and security of the building and all students and staff, please only remain in the Commons area when dropping off and picking up. Students know that classrooms are not accessible to them before school and that after school they may only return for forgotten items until 3:45. After that the school building is not accessible to students and parents. Please encourage responsibility as we do the same at school.

AHSD25 - STUDENT HANDBOOK (FINAL POST!)
If you haven't already done so, please read through the Arlington Heights School District 25 Parent/Student Handbook as it has a lot of important information. A couple of quick highlights I wanted to make you aware of are below:
- The possession and use of cell phones and other electronic devices, including wearables, are subject to the following rules:
- Elementary students are expected to leave electronics in the “off” position and in their backpacks throughout the school day.
- Except as required in class or extracurricular programs, students cannot wear the following items in school:
- Hats, hoods, helmets or headgear (except as a religious observance or if medically necessary).
- Sunglasses (unless medically necessitated)
We know this might be an adjustment for some students, so please remind your child that they will have to take off their “wearable” watch and their hats once they are at school unless there is a medical need. Students are permitted to wear hats and/or sunglasses during recess for sun protection.
