Normandy Park School
Week of April 24th
I hope that everyone had a great weekend!
Monday, April 24th is an E Day.
HSA NPS Color Run will now be held on the rain date (May 19th).
Reminders for Color Run:
- All students will be given a t-shirt to wear over their clothing and sunglasses to protect their eyes, but it would be a good idea to wear pants/shorts and shoes that you don’t mind getting stained, just in case.
- All students should also bring a towel to protect the seats of buses/cars for the ride home.
- If you are attending the event and want to be there for the start, we recommend arriving by 1:40 (to have time to park and get ready!)
Save the Date- NPS HSA Color Run- DONATE & PARTICIPATE!
*If the weather forecast calls for rain the day of the event, we will call to use the rain date by 4/25. We are not waiting for the day of the event, given that many parent volunteers and spectators are/have to make arrangements with work to attend.
UPDATE 4.25: THE COLOR RUN WILL NOW BE HELD ON THE RAINDATE OF MAY 19th.
For Parents Attending the Color Run:
At the end of the Color Run, students will line up with their classroom outside on the field. Line up in front of your child’s teacher, and he/she will sign out your child accordingly. Please do not take your child without signing them out with their classroom teacher. Once you have your child, please proceed to your cars to leave. This will ensure our dismissal runs smoothly. Thank you for your support!
This is our last major fundraiser of the school year, this is our biggest opportunity to raise money to support next year’s HSA Community Events.
Donation forms went home in backpacks before break, but you can also donate online here: ttps://givebutter.com/NPSColorRun23 .
Please help support this fundraiser for our HSA and all they do for our school.

Digital awareness:
Phone, tablet, kindle, computer, which one is your favorite? They all serve a purpose, whether it be for entertainment, research, work, school, or connection with others. Most children have access to a device these days and it is easy to forget that a phone or tablet with internet service is the same as having a computer. And let’s face it, children are curious and often impulsive. Sometimes they are embarrassed to ask adults questions but often it’s just easy to look something up or play a quick game. Vigilance is key to children’s online safety and in addition to parent safety “locks”, a huge part of it involves conversation around digital safety and content. One of the best ways to handle internet safety is to talk with your child. There are many areas to discuss including:
The digital footprint. Whatever is put out on the internet is there forever.
Only talk to people online who you know
Be kind when texting others; texts that they might think are “private” can be screen shot and shared with others. In addition it’s also easy to misinterpret a text.
Never take anyone’s picture without permission and…..
Make sure to have permission before posting photos of others online.
Keep passwords private and shut or lock any device that is unattended
Not sharing personal information online including name, address, age or school you are attending.
Make sure you are up to date on the video games your child is are playing and the social media sites they are on. Familiarize yourself with the content. For example, Fortnite is a very popular video game amongst elementary school students but did you know that it is rated 13+ due to violence and the open chat content? Thirteen is also the recommended agae for Snapchat and Tiktok. I am not saying your child should not play, or be on any social media, rather, know what they are doing online and discuss it with them.
One great resource available to you as parents is Common Sense .org. It is chock full information on internet safety. They have videos explaining many of the video games, and Q&A sections on all things tech for you and your child. Click on the link below for more information.

Here at Normandy Park, Mrs. Gilson, our media specialist is another great resource and has taught classes on digital safety.
I want to take a moment to thank our amazing Social Work Interns: Mrs. Mei Moyer and Ms. Khirstie Diaz who have done a phenomenal job helping our students, parents and staff alike. They have been an integral part of our Normandy Park Family. Mrs. Moyer leaves us at the end of April and Ms. Diaz the first week in May. We wish them much success in their careers as Social Workers!
Celebrations and special days this month include:
Easter, Passover, Earth Day, Ramadan (which started the end of March and goes through mid April) and Autism awareness.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions about anything in this newsletter or any concerns you have about your child.
As always, stay awesome!

Digital Awareness: Did You Know?
Most social media apps have an age rating of 13+. Under the COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) Law, social media cannot collect, share or store any personal information about individuals under the age of 13, unless the company has permission from their Parents/Carers.
Content on a lot of these apps might even have a higher age rating. For example, CommonSense Media provides a 16+ age rating for SnapChat and a 15+ age rating for TikTok.
Enrichment Clusters
2/3 and 4/5 students are entering the 3rd cycle of this year's schoolwide enrichment clusters!
Schoolwide enrichment clusters are an opportunity for all students to experience an extension of content and an exploration of interests through small group enrichment clusters relating to an area of interest. They engage with students from other classrooms. Clusters meet for approximately 4 to 6 weeks (for 40 minutes, 1x per 6 day cycle during the school day; last period on D Day). During the enrichment cluster period, every teacher in the unit and specialists, meet with a small group.
