April Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Arab American Heritage Month, Autism Acceptance Month, Month of the Military Child, National Volunteer Month
Arab American Heritage Month was first nationally recognized in 2021. Estimates are that 3.7 million Americans have Arab roots and, in the Snohomish School District Arabic is the fifth most spoken language. The recognition coincides with Ramadan, a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam’s major holidays. During this time, Muslims around the world will fast from dawn to sunset as part of their spiritual practices. If you or your student need support during Ramadan, please do not hesitate to reach out to your teacher or principal.
Autism Acceptance Month is also recognized in April. The first national recognition occurred in 1972 with Autistic Children’s Week. Christopher Banks, President and CEO of the Autism Society of America, expressed the following about moving from awareness to acceptance: “While we will always work to spread awareness, words matter as we strive for autistic individuals to live fully in all areas of life. As many individuals and families affected by autism know, acceptance is often one of the biggest barriers to finding and developing a strong support system.” This year also marks the 15th annual World Autism Awareness Day on April 2.
Note: Glacier Peak High School senior Kylan Crawford, who prefers the word acceptance over awareness, created the featured autism graphic (upper left) to raise awareness for Autism Acceptance/Awareness Month. As many individuals and families affected by autism know, acceptance is often one of the biggest barriers to finding and developing a strong support system.” For those interested in learning more about autism, Kylan recommends ASAN - Autistic Self Advocacy Network - at https://autisticadvocacy.org/. Thank you Kylan for your voice and work on this important topic!
The Month of the Military Child was first recognized in April of 1986 as a time to acknowledge children for their selflessness and sacrifice as they serve our country as part of a military family. According to Military One Source, the theme for 2022 is focusing on the overall mental health and well-being of military children of all ages and providing support to help military families thrive. The Military Child Education Coalition provides information and resources for children, parents, and educators to support children in military families.
National Volunteer Month and Global Volunteer Month are dedicated to honoring the importance of volunteers and their contribution of service. Beginning as National Volunteer Week in 1974, participation and activities continue to grow exponentially each year. This year, the week is being held April 17-23.
For more information on recognitions throughout the year please check out this link from pta.org.

In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney's The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World." Ariel, King Triton's youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

Junior awarded opportunity to study in Germany
Snohomish High School (SHS) junior Ryan Mokszycki was recently selected to participate in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) program. The CBYX scholarship is for motivated high school students who want to experience a culture and learn a language through a full immersion experience. Students learn about German culture first-hand by living with a host family and attending a German high school. Only 250 students (out of approximately 12,000 applicants) are awarded the opportunity to study in Germany on this scholarship.
“Ever since I started German class with Frau Rüter in 9th grade, it has been my favorite class and my favorite hobby," said Ryan. "I decided that I wanted to become fluent in German and make my career out of that, and I also decided that it was my dream to go to Germany someday. I knew as soon as I heard about the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program that I wanted to apply, and I am so happy that I received the scholarship and get to spend next year in Germany! I will be staying with a volunteer host family and will attend a German school for the 2023-2024 school year, and am so excited to learn as much of the language and culture as I can, while sharing our American culture with my German peers as a Junior Ambassador with CBYX.”
