April 2022 Newsletter
Dear Rainiers,
April is such a rewarding month and certainly one of my most favorite months of the year. We get to enjoy spring cleaning, longer days, flowers and fresh starts! Our students have already been out and about more during instructional time as our teachers are wonderful supporters of outdoor education. Students have been working diligently to plan a variety of vegetables in our school garden. We can't wait to share our harvest with the community.
As Spring Break approaches, I hope everyone is eager to enjoy extra time with family and friends. If you are looking for some fun activities to engage your child in over the spring break, I’ve highlighted a few websites below that offer STEM activities:
As we return from break, we will be nearing the end of the third quarter. There will be a half day on Thursday, April 14th for teachers to input grades and report card comments. Report cards will be sent home with students on April 22nd.
With a heavy heart I am writing to inform you that Mrs. Hehemann has chosen to resign her secretarial position effective June 30th. It has been a pleasure to work with her. This year has been one of challenges and also celebrations as we worked together to meet the needs of our students and support teachers through the stress of Covid and finally getting back to a new normal. Mrs. Hehemann will remain a part of CCA as she is looking forward to subbing in the building next year. She also looks forward to volunteering and having time for home projects. We thank her for her dedication to the students, their families and the staff here at CCA!
Lastly, I want to express my gratitude for our teachers and staff at Columbia Crest. What a wonderful job they are doing keeping students engaged, learning and excited about school each day during this unusual year. We are so lucky to have such a hardworking group of individuals. I hope each of you can show your gratitude in some way or another.
Happy Spring everyone!
Cheerfully,
Principal Shew

Student Council News
April will be a busy time for Student Council! The students decided to create another coloring contest. We will be handing out the pages soon. They also are doing a focus on reading with an EGG- cellent activity for all CCA students.
To celebrate success in earning AR points there will be a prize giveaway. We are so proud of the readers in this school. We have students who have already earned more points than any other year. Now it is a race to the end.
Student Council elections are coming in April as well. We encourage students to build their leadership skills by being involved. 5th -7th grade students will get packets following Spring Break.
As always it is my pleasure to work with these greats students,

Highly Capable Program Highlight
March Highlight
Our first middle school session was heavily focused on our passion projects and making sure we were ready to jump right in. Remaining students presented their pitches, worked on final plans, and began putting in materials requests. We also did some lego building challenges in honor of Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss Day) and joined Columbia Crest Middle Schoolers for their read in. Students were gifted donuts by CCA leadership students too!
Our second session we worked on passion projects, solving two minute mysteries, and even did a St. Patrick's Day themed STEM project to celebrate! Our last session students attended a field trip to Pierce College Ft. Steilacoom. They got to tour campus with students and attend a video presentation of our galaxy in the science dome there. Elementary students also celebrated St. Patrick's Day with some themed brain teasers, a leprechaun trap STEM project, and also had time to work on their passion projects.
The highlight for elementary this month was our second session, in which we attended a field trip to Pioneer Farm and the Native American Village. Students got to tour both parts of the facility and learn about how children lived in each type of community in the past. We are looking forward to a few more field trips and fun experiences before the year ends!
