“This spellbinding, romantic journey begins with a simple encounter between a man and a woman. But what happens next defies the boundaries of the world we think we know—delving into the infinite possibilities of their relationship and raising questions about the difference between choice and destiny.” --Dramatists Play Services

MERCANTS AND NEIGHBORS
In the early years of the twentieth century, W.A. Shepard moved with his family into town from their home in the Cloverdale community where he had been the co-owner of Shepard and Hyde Grocery. He soon opened a thriving grocery store in the 200 block of North Court Street in the building known today as the Otto Speake building. Extant ledgers from his store bear the names of his customers throughout both Lauderdale and Colbert Counties. Many of the goods he stocked in the popular store came from the wholesaler Horace P. Lucas in his establishment on East College Street. (He also owned a retail store in the 100 block of East Tennessee Street in a building which still today bears the name “Lucas” cut in stone on the second story of the façade that faces Tennessee Street.) Besides doing business with each other, these two gentlemen and their families were neighbors and friends on Walnut Street: the Shepards at 447 North Walnut and the Lucases at 507 North Walnut. Both were the original owners of these two houses. The friendship between the two families continued through succeeding generations – proof that business and social relationships can co-exist amicably.
