Colton Hills School Bulletin
31 January 2024
Introduction by Ms L McClure, Associate Assistant Headteacher, Sixth Form
Welcome to our latest bulletin. February is LGBT+ History month, where we celebrate the many achievements and history of LGBT+ figures, such as mathematician Alan Turing, writer Virgina Woolf and actor Sir Ian McKellen. As a school that embraces diversity, there will also be assemblies for every year group marking this event.
As we move through this important term, which sees our Year 9s make their options choices and Year 11s learn more about Sixth Form course options, it's a great time to explore the extra-curricular options we have at Colton Hills. I am always amazed by the variety of clubs and P6 activities that are on offer including music, table tennis, a variety of science activities, film, dancing, digital art, swimming, basketball and much more, alongside revision and homework clubs. There are often new opportunities, such as the Environment Leaders course, launched this year, for a group of Year 12 volunteers. This is a brand new course for which we are a trailblazing school, one of only 25 in the whole of the UK!
This term also sees us working on more ways to support our beautiful school environment and the planet as a whole, so keep an eye out for brand new trees, the Great Plastic Count, the Great British Spring Clean and a crisp packet eating fish!
Warm welcome to PGCE students
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our PGCE students, Shuocong, Haydn and Ellie, who are joining Colton Hills for the next few months as part of their training. They will be involved in dance, Physics, PE and Geography as part of their attachment. Welcome to Colton Hills!

School trip to De Montford University
24th January was the third Year 7 university trip for this year. Students got to visit De Montford University in Leicestershire and and one of the activities was building a spaghetti tower using marshmallows using a limited budget. They even got to see students graduating on their tour!
Colton Hills launcher Trailblazer Leadership Programme
We are thrilled to be published in Express and Star's newspaper on 24th January, promoting our Trailblazer Leadership Skills Programme with Leadership Skills Foundation. Our school has high expectations for our students and we create opportunities like these to enable them to reach their potential. We are very proud to be one of the 25 school in the country to have qualified for this programme promoting positive change in the environment.
Multi-Sports Night for Local Primary Schools
On Thusday, 25 January, our BTEC student leaders did a fantastic job managing and leading several local primary schools through multi sports activities in our sports hall. They displayed confidence, leadership qualities and were an absolute credit to our school.
Chinese New Year Library Competition
This Chinese New Year marks the arrival of the dragon and this major celebration for Chinese around the world starts on 10th February till 17th February. Our library is running a dragon themed bookmark design competition. Winning designs will be reproduced and distributed around the school. Good luck! We would like to wish all our staff and students who are celebrating this occasion with family and friends, a very Happy Prosperous New Year !
Holocaust Memorial Day 27 January
27 January marks International #HolocaustMemorialDay and marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. It is important that we share these stories and remember these historical events and make sure history does not repeat itself.
Sea Themed Art Lesson
Last week our Year 8 students got busy in their art lesson, making sea themed clay tiles inspired by Yellena James, a multidisciplinary artist who creates vibrant and immersive art. Don't these creations by our students look incredible?
