The health and wellbeing of our children, staff and community is a top priority. Therefore, to ensure continuity of learning and the well-being of our students we are going to move to a hybrid learning model for the remainder of the term starting Monday 7th March. The intention is to remain in hybrid learning until the end of Term 1 and return to a full school programme Term 2. This decision has been made in consultation with the Ministry of Education, Wairoa College Board, staff, and students.

Hybrid Model

Year 7 to 10 students would all be at school on Thursdays and Fridays. They would be distance learning Monday to Wednesday except if caregivers need students to come to school as they need supervision. These students would need to report to the Hall at 8.45am each morning. They will be placed in bubble groups. Supervised students will be on site as normal from 8.45am – 3pm. They would be continuing with the same online work as distance learners. If you require your child to be supervised Monday and Tuesday, please notify the school office or email info@wairoacollege.school.nz. Wednesday is learning from home for the whole school.

Year 11-13 students would be at school on Monday and Tuesdays. We will change the timetable to 6 periods a day to ensure they see each of their subject teachers twice. For the rest of the week, they would be distance learning.

Our special needs unit will be available for face-to-face learning at school Monday/Tuesday and Thursday/ Friday. Wednesday students will be learning from home. Please contact Jenny Ratcliffe for resources to support this.

2022 Wairoa College Student Laptop Loan Agreement

Over the last few weeks students should have brought home a contract to have signed and returned if they would need to borrow a device in the case of distance learning. Seniors will have priority.

Devices

Devices will be issued to seniors' period 5 Tuesday 8th March. Year 7 and 8 teachers will give students their school device this Friday if they have returned a device agreement form. We will issue Year 9 and 10 devices next week on Friday 11th March.

A big thankyou to JN Williams Trust for supporting Wairoa College Services Academy by way of funding towards the Life101 Programme. Lead facilitator and co-founder Philip Moon conducted a four-day workshop focusing on curriculum vitae, job interviews, successful saving, budgeting and goal setting. The aim was to educate students with the knowledge of financial success by planting the seed now so the future them can reap the rewards. An awesome course delivered by a passionate and motivated facilitator.

The uniform shop is having a supply issue with shorts in several sizes. These have been on order since September, 2021. Due to Covid-19 the supply has been dramatically disrupted and we are still awaiting our order. We are in constant contact with the company in Auckland that supplies our uniform. They have indicated that they will have our order despatched by the start of March. We apologise if you have paid and are still awaiting your uniform. We will let you know as soon as our order is received.

UNIFORM SHOP HOURS - Monday to Friday 8am to 9am

Trades academy at EIT has now started for the year. A group of keen year 12 and 13 will travel to Gisborne each Friday. Its an early start with a 7 am departure but it is worth it!!! Students are able to immerse themselves in tertiary type courses such as automotive, building, engineering, hospitality , hairdressing and barbering, visual art, computer tech. Plus they get to mix and mingle with Tairawhiti Schools to make new mates. Trades academy enrolments are managed by Karen Hayward.

I made it into the Hawkes Bay under 15's team! This is the secondary team for Hawkes Bay. There was at least 35 people that took place in the trails for the two teams. I train twice a week, including a training on Monday with my team of 12. As a team, we run drills, talk about basketball theories and attempt to improve our play. I also attend training on Thursday that focus on fitness, movement and stamina for basketball. Both training take place at the Hastings sports park. I am grateful to be apart of the team, proud to represent Wairoa and excited for what the future brings for me with Basketball.

The BP business challenge is a unique 3 day programme for Year 10/11

students that develops skills, understandings and attitudes about how

entrepreneurs start a business, how a successful business operates and

connects the students with their local business community. The programme is run by two external facilitators who have practical business experience and a background in working with young people. On the final day, the students present their business ideas, creations and

discoveries to a panel of judges at a business expo.

The Wairoa College Year 13 Prefect group, attended the Guthrie Smith Education Centre in Tutira on Tuesday 8th February – Wednesday 9th February 2022. This was an interesting and challenging experience for all. The aim of this leadership camp is to gel and galvanize the Year 13 Prefect group so they are able to work well together, to lead the student body this year.

Prior to attending this camp, all Year 13 Prefects were expected to be onsite at Wairoa College, on the 31st January before the academic school year commenced. This was in order to complete their personality type testing and set the menu for the leadership camp. Once the personality type testing was completed, it became very evident that we had a prefect group that contain a lot of diversity and different abilities.

We travelled to Tutira to undertake Outdoor Leadership activities on Day 1. As a group we completed the High Rope Course, stayed the night where leadership planning was conducted and initiative were developed to grow our school values. On Day 2, we completed one more Outdoor Leadership activity on lake Tutira, plus work on Goal setting and Job Descriptions for the coming year before returning to Wairoa. On the lake students completed Canadian Canoeing and swimming in the lake.

All of the activities completed helped the students to develop their leadership and team work abilities. It was pleasing to see that the current Year 13 Prefect group were respectful of one another and were prepared to take themselves out of their comfort zone.

I would like to personally thank them for stepping up to the challenges that were presented to them. Lastly, I would like to thank Toby Taylor (Sports Coordinator) and Lisa Akers (Deputy Principal) who contributed a lot to this camp to make it such a success.

Attendance is a major focus for Term One. ‘Regular’ attendance is defined for statistical purposes as 90% or higher. However, Ministry of Education analysis shows every day has a cumulative impact on a child’s learning and there is no ‘safe’ level of non-attendance. Every day matters. In the first instance your child's whanau teacher will follow up on unexplained absences. If your child is sick please notify the school by phone, text, or email by 8.30 am. Try to arrange appointments etc. outside school hours or in the holidays.

Students may not leave the school during school hours except by special arrangement – for example, a parent request (verbal or written) for the student to attend a medical appointment. The student must sign out at the office.

Exceptions are:

• Lunch passes: Permanent, for students who travel to their own home for lunch each day, and one-off, for students who need to be out of school at lunch time on a particular day. Issuing of this pass is managed by the office manager, and requires a note from the student's parent/caregiver.

• Year 13 passes: Year 13 students who meet the criteria can be issued a pass to leave the school during lunch times. The pass can be withdrawn if the student abuses this privilege or their attendance doesn't meet 85%.

Any students, teachers, parents, care-givers keen to play tennis meet at the Wairoa Tennis Club every Saturday at 1pm. Student and adult fees will be decided on Thursday night. Learners and experienced players are all welcome.
