A Note from Martha...
Dear LISD Families,
October 5 was World Teachers' Day! We welcome this international celebration of teachers...all the time, energy, love, dedication, and humility that are part of every single day. When teachers aren't working directly with students, they are planning, collaborating, reading, learning, problem solving, and worrying. Yes, worrying....about your children. We worry about their engagement, mental health, mastery of knowledge and skills, stamina, character, safety, health, and happiness.
Teachers encounter hundreds of big and small decision making moments every day. They are challenged by the things students do and say, as well as limited budgets, help, and time...and they keep showing up for students, families, and each other. I've been an educator for 30 years, and I continue to be inspired by teachers here and everywhere, who truly contribute to a better world.
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend.
All my best,
Martha

Heritage Spanish Class celebrates Cuba!
This week the Heritage Spanish: Culinary class honored Cuba by preparing a renowned sandwich known as the "Cubano". This iconic sandwich consists of several specific layers. It starts with the bottom bun, followed by a spread of a mustard and mayonnaise mixture. Then comes two slices of ham, finely chopped lechon (which is seasoned roasted pork), a slice of Swiss cheese, and a pickle slice. The sandwich is then topped with another layer of the mustard and mayonnaise mixture, and finally, the top bun.
To understand not just the sandwich but also its preparation, the class was introduced to the concept of an assembly line. This method was demonstrated through four distinct stations. The first was dedicated to carving and chopping the lechon. The second station focused on the sandwich assembly, layering the ingredients in the correct order. The third station buttered and pressed the sandwiches to achieve that classic toasted finish. Lastly, the fourth station dealt with plating the sandwiches, making them ready to serve.
At the conclusion of their activity, the students gathered around to relish the sandwiches they had meticulously prepared. As they savored each bite, conversations blossomed about the intricate details and distinct flavors that comprised their creations. Recognizing the esteem and admiration they held for Dr. Martin, one student thoughtfully prepared a plate specifically for her. Just as the class was drawing to a close, Dr. Martin entered the room. With an initial exclamation of "This is ridiculous!", she quickly clarified her jest with a beaming "I mean, this is ridiculously good." Witnessing her genuine appreciation and delight, it became unmistakably evident to everyone present that they had achieved something truly special that day. Their hard work had culminated in not just a delicious sandwich but a shared moment of pride and accomplishment.
