Bible Class
While psalms are all poetic, they fall into a number of literary categories. It can be helpful to understand these categories as we read the book of Psalms.
Hymns are songs of praise or thanksgiving. These praises are what the book of Psalms is named for. It is good and right that we should praise our Almighty God.
Penitential psalms express repentance for sin and beg God for grace and forgiveness. These songs can be sung on behalf of a community or of an individual.
Wisdom psalms share truths about God and his world, and about our relationship to our King. These psalms are not arguments for truth, but an expression of absolute biblical reality. Some wisdom psalms state truth about God’s Word and Law, while others talk about history, or attributes of God.
Royal psalms are about the blood line of the coming Messiah. They talk about David as the king through whom God will one day deliver his people when the Savior is born.
Messianic psalms are different from royal psalms. Rather than talking about David or a king in the line of Judah, a Messianic psalm is prophetic—written about the Messiah.
Imprecatory psalms talk about God’s justice and wrath. There are people who have acted against God’s laws and oppressed his people. Imprecatory psalms appeal to God to judge his enemies.
Psalms of lament are those that explore pain and injustice. These psalms don’t just focus on misery, however. They usually also express trust in a good and holy God. They will also usually then praise God.
--From our Bible Roadtrip Curriculum
Students are memorizing the following verses for the first week:
K-3 Students - Psalm 46:10-11
4-5 Students - Psalm 46:10-11, Psalm 46:1
6-8 Students - Psalm 46:10-11, Psalm 46:1, Psalm 51:10-12, Romans 5:15-16
Psalm 46:10-11, "'Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!' The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress."
Reading this week included the following:
Psalm 46, 51, 56, 61, 66 (K-3)
Psalm 46-47, 51, 53, 56-57, 61, 63, 66, 71 (4-5)
Psalm 45-47, 51-53, 56-58, 61, 63, 65, 66, 71-72 (6-8)
Questions to ponder:
What does the title tell us about the author and timing of this psalm? What did David tell us were the sacrifices of God? What does that mean? (Psalm 51:17)
What does the fool say in his heart? (Psalm 53:1) Who has done good apart from God? (Psalm 53:3)
Have you experienced God’s faithfulness? Can you remember when he has helped you in times of need? Does that memory help you have faith that he will help you again? (Psalm 63)
What can you praise God for? (Psalm 66)
