Nixon Elementary Weekly Update

No School Monday, February 5:

Don't forget that Monday, February 5 is a staff learning day. We will NOT have school for our learners. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday (February 6)!

Cold Weather Gear:

Boy Iowa weather sure does a number on us this time of year! Most of the snow has melted away, but we'll still be outside to have fun and play! Be sure to check the weather before sending your children to school so they are prepared for OUTDOOR recess!

PTA Reminders:

Tuesday, February 6 is Nixon Night at Panera. Bring a flyer or show the one from this newsletter to help our very own Nixon PTA! 25% of sales go directly to the PTA to support with everything from teacher appreciation to field trips and more! Be sure to stop out and support our Nixon PTA!

We are pleased to tell you that all of our middle of the year testing is completed and our data has been collected. We didn't quite make our ambitious mid-year goals, however we did see some amazing growth and learners getting closer and closer to grade level in math and reading. This is especially exciting as we had 26 new learners join our Nixon community during the first semester alone!

You can help support your children by reading each night with them, practicing their math facts, and talking to them about their day at school. Be sure to come to winter conferences in a few weeks for specific updates about your child and their progress in both reading and math.

Beginning of the Year Reading Data on FAST Assessment (September 2023):

• 65% of Learners Met Benchmark
• 63% of Learners Adequately Progressing

Middle of the Year Reading Data on FAST Assessment (January 2024):

• 66% of Learners Met Benchmark
• 65% of Learners Adequately Progressing
• 96% of Learners Made Growth from Beginning to Middle of the Year

Middle of the Year Math Data--iReady Math & K/1 Math Assessments (January 2024):

• 72% of Kindergarteners can fluently count from 1-100 by 1's AND Count by 1's when starting and stopping at different numbers.
• 77% of 1st graders can add fluently within 6, and 50% of 1st graders can subtract fluently within 6.
• 66% of Nixon Personalized Learners (Grades 2-5) grew 50% closer to their end of the year goal on the iReady Math Diagnostic.

• Box Tops for Education- hopefully you have the app downloaded. And every time you shop (any store) just get on the app, and submit your receipt (you will take a picture of your receipt within the app or there is a way to submit digital receipts now as well). And if you purchase any "box top" items it will credit us, just make sure to connect to Nixon Elementary in Hiawatha! Just a heads up to try and scan those receipts right at purchase. You do always have to have the date showing when you scan the receipt, and it HAS to be done within 2 weeks of purchase date. Each box top is worth 10 cents!
• There are some GREAT bonus offers right now in the app! So don't forget to check those out!
• 40 bonus plus a doubling bonus when you buy 4 box top products in one transaction at Target (between now and Feb 4th)
• 20 bonus box tops at Sam's Club when you buy 2 participating products in a single transaction through the month of January
• 50 bonus box tops at HyVee when you buy any 5 participating products in a single transaction through the month of January
• 20 bonus box tops at Walmart when you buy any 2 participating products in a single transaction between now and February 14th.
• There's a variety of smaller bonuses as well.
