Spring 2021

The 2020-2021 academic year has offered new opportunities for librarians to provide and support instruction. Specifically, we have been using technology to provide synchronous and asynchronous research and instructional support.

• Instructional Videos: Librarians have created many new instructional videos this year that can be found on the Carmichael Library YouTube page and the tutorials page on the library website. Many of these videos are also embedded in research guides.

• Research Guides: Librarians have created or enhanced many research guides, or course specific web pages that contain resources and information to support course assignments. They can be found by clicking the Research Guides button on the library homepage. And, they can easily be integrated into Canvas via a link. Faculty who would like a research guide for their class or subject can complete the Request a Research Guide form.

• Zoom Instructional Sessions: Librarians have provided instructional sessions to many courses via Zoom. This allows both on-campus and remote students to access library instruction tailored to their course assignments and research requirements. Faculty can request instruction (remote or in person) by completing this Library Instruction Registration form.

• Embedded librarians: Upon request by faculty, librarians have been added to Canvas courses in order to provide a more direct access point to support students and assignments. Contact a librarian if you are interested embedding a librarian in your Canvas course.

Using these tools and strategies, librarians have been able to support instructional continuity and to meet the needs of on-campus and remote students and faculty. For example, ENG 101 usually involves in person scavenger hunts with iPads to introduce students to the library building and resources. This year, students have engaged in a virtual tour of the library centered on a series of three videos (one for each floor). In addition, they have been introduced to archival resources and information via videos that highlight key print resources that have been digitized to allow remote access. And, librarians have provided Zoom instructional sessions and are embedded into several sections in Canvas. Below is a screenshot of the English 101 research guide featuring the library tours. Spring is on the way, with its hopeful burst of flowers and pale green leaves. As we make our way through this unusual academic year, we have reason to feel hope for the future – as vaccines are distributed and the pandemic begins to subside – and gratitude for the community in which we reside. UM students, faculty, and staff have been resourceful and resilient this year, finding new ways to engage in the teaching and learning process. The library has been a part of this effort. We’ve kept our doors open for those needing a place to study, do research, use a computer, or seek tutoring or technology assistance. And we’ve also pursued different modes of working with students and faculty, as described in this newsletter. New initiatives – such as video tutorials, new DML technology, and inspiring stairs! – have sprouted among our ongoing work to provide the campus community with excellent books, databases, and videos and a wealth of digitized archival material.

The University of Montevallo has been around for 125 years, and it will certainly survive the Covid-19 pandemic. The library has been a part of the institution since its beginnings as the Alabama Girls’ Industrial School, and we too will endure. We are hopeful that we will be able to make creative use of the lessons learned from adapting to this year’s unique challenges to make our library services even stronger in the future!

Students have a $15 credit each semester to print from the library, dorms, and labs on campus.

1. Log-in to your Papercut (Falconprint) account.
2. Click "Add credit"
3. Select the amount to add and pay with a credit /debit card.

Or you can pay with cash at the library circulation desk.

What is the Criterion Collection?

The Criterion Collection was founded in 1984 to produce global classic and contemporary films in high technical quality and with supplemental features. In honor of Black History Month, the Library has curated a Black Lives Matter display containing relevant literature and media available for checkout in the library foyer until spring break. Stop by and check it out!

Exciting news! The Anna Crawford Milner Archives and Special Collections has recently launched the Montevallo High School Digital Archive, a joint effort between Montevallo High School, the Montevallo Historical Society, and the University of Montevallo's Milner Archives and Special Collections. This collection features two MHS publications.

• Montala is the official yearbook of Montevallo High School.
• Spotlight is the student newspaper of Montevallo High School.

To visit this new project, go to the Archives homepage and choose Montevallo High School Digital Archive from the menu.

Carmichael Library received a nearly $50,000 Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant to purchase and update technology! New Wacom drawing tablets are available. With a drawing tablet, you can sketch and create content on a responsive pad and see your drawings appear on screen. The IMLS grant also funded new Chromebook laptops, Mobile WiFi Hot Spots to connect devices to the internet, and charging/power banks to keep the devices powered up!

The new devices are available to check out at the Circulation Desk in Carmichael Library with a one week checkout! Carmichael Library is happy to offer new ways to offer technology and support for students and faculty on campus.

Congratulations to our library circulation manager Kaycee Ledbetter and student workers Parker Brandt, and Yeldray Perkins, whose "Go Green and Go Lean" project was supported by UM's Green Fund. The project transformed the stairs between the three floors with inspiring images and words to encourage their use for the benefit your health and the environment.
