THINGS TO DO! Please check this!!
EVERYONE (Graduate and Undergraduate):
- GRADUATION IN THE NEXT YEAR? You need to apply to graduate - there is a link in your DEGREE WORKS - sign up now if Spring 24 or Fall 24 is your last semester.
GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY:
- GRADUATE STUDENTS - if you have COMPLETED 12 credits, you must apply for Candidacy - see your degree works for the link to do so.
- GRADUATE STUDENTS - during your LAST semester of your degree program, you must sign up for and take the Comprehensive Exam (scroll down to "Dates to Know for Spring 2024")- this is required for graduation.
Dates to Know for Spring 2024:
- Final Date to Drop a Spring Course for Grad or Undergrad - February 9th
- Course Withdraw Period - February 10 - May 3
** Difference between Drop and Withdraw:
- Drop means you have decided not to take the course and you get out of it; there is likely no financial penalty and it does not show up on your transcripts
- Withdraw means you have chosen to not finish the course; you are financially responsible and it will show up on your transcript (with a "W") that you withdrew. It is recommended that you withdraw from a course that you are certain to fail. This way it does not get added into your GPA and jeopardize your ability to stay in your degree program.
- Consult with your advisor before doing either a Drop or a Withdraw to be sure you understand the ramifications for your particular situation.
- Spring Recess - March 11-15. 2024

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO DO BESIDES MY CLASSES? (GREAT FOR THE SUMMER)
All students who graduate from CTE at either the graduate or undergraduate levels must have:
- SSHS 1020
- DASA 1020
Safe Schools, Healthy Students (SSHS) and Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) are professional development workshops administered through SUNY Oswego's Division of Extended Learning in support of degrees conferred through the School of Education.
SSHS 1020 is made up of 8 workshops and is taught in an online format. It costs $200.
DASA 1020 is made up of one workshop and is taught in an online format. It costs $90.
You can register for both of these any semester - they are both offered online! They both MUST be taken before you can student teach.
NOTE:
- If you have already taken DASA somewhere else, you can make a copy of your certificate, write your ID number on it and send it to the Registrar. It will then be added to your degree works and fulfill the requirement for graduation. You do not have to retake it.
- SSHS 1020 MUST be taken at SUNY OSWEGO!

BEFORE YOU CAN STUDENT TEACH, you must complete 100 hours of observations (field experience) in NYS Public Schools. This is a NYSED requirement. We embed those hours into your courses with us (approx. 15 hours/course). The Clinical Practice and Partnerships Office coordinates the field experiences and every MUST fill out the information they require each semester.

MEET YOUR PROFESSORS
Dr. Jan Held Woodworth has her BS, MPS and PhD from Cornell University. She is a Permanently Certified NYS Agriculture Teacher. She taught at Minisink Valley (Orange Co) and Carthage (Jefferson Co) High Schools. During that time she served as the Secretary, President-Elect and President of the Agriculture Teachers Association (NYAAE), as well as a Trustee for the NYS FFA and a Board Member on the NYS FFA Leadership Training Foundation. After earning her Ph.D. she taught at Morrisville State College (Dairy Science) and Syracuse University (Education) before coming to Oswego as an Adjunct first (23 years ago) and then as a full time faculty member. Dr. Woodworth is an Associate Professor and serves as the graduate coordinator for our department; she previously served as undergraduate coordinator and OCE coordinator. She is also currently the Chair of the Faculty Council in the School of Education.
Away from Oswego she is still involved in education as an 13 year member of the Board of Education at Cazenovia Central School District, and serves as an Advisory member for the Cazenovia Agriculture Program, Madison-BOCES Equine and Small Animal Program, Madison-Oneida BOCES CTE, and CITI BOCES CTE.
On a personal note, Dr. Woodworth is married and has 3 grown children (one of whom is married) and 2 young grandchildren. She is also the primary care-giver for her elderly mother. She and her husband own Lamplit Farm, a draft horse drawn ride business that is both a hobby and a business venture. In addition to draft horses, they have goats, chickens, a donkey and dogs and cats. Dr. Woodworth particularly enjoys adopting special needs animals, currently with 2 cats and a donkey that fall in that category.
OTHER THAN THE NORMAL, WHAT IS THE CTEP DEPARTMENT UP TO?
You can always find our department members teaching, involved in campus and school of education committees, working with student teachers and doing advisement, but we are involved in other efforts you may or may not know about. We thought we would share::

In Support of Regional Workforce Capacity Building
SUNY Oswego’s Instructor Bootcamp* was created to train up to 120 professionals from high-demand career fields including construction, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing to become instructors in regional high school, community college, adult education, and apprenticeship programs. We are completing our second of six cohorts, and will begin the third cohort in a couple of weeks
*Note: This Instructor Bootcamp does not lead to K-12 classroom certification.

The following two teachers gradated from Oswego's Graduate Program in CTE as Agriculture Teachers; they both were recognized for our Region of the country (6 regions) at the National Level at the NAAE Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, in December of 2023.

Congratulations to the 2023 NAAE (National Association of Agriculture Educators) Outstanding Early Career Teacher Award recipient for Region VI- Rayne Ives (Oswego '19) from Remsen!
Agricultural education is faced with a shortage of qualified teachers. Unless students studying at our nation’s teaching institutions enter and remain in the profession, a shortage of teachers will continue to exist. The Outstanding Early Career Teacher Award, formerly known as the NAAE Outstanding Young Member Award, recognizes innovative early career teachers with outstanding professional records, including participation in NAAE.

Congratulations to our 2023 XLR8 participant, Mary-Elizabeth Foote (Oswego '21) from Schuylerville!
Retaining quality experienced teachers is important to the future of agricultural education. In 2013, NAAE developed XLR8 — the eXcellence in Leadership for Retention professional development program — to meet the needs of mid-career agriculture teachers.
XLR8 is a year-long professional development program that targets agriculture teachers in their 7th-15th year of teaching.
