ELC at George Earle Weekly Update

One of our amazing aides here at The ELC, Mrs. Michelle, spent her October, November, and December knitting hats for ALL 300 of our Kindergarteners! The are absolutely BEAUTIFUL and made with so much love and care for our kiddos <3

The Friday STEM challenge was to build a gingerbread looking house out of gummies and toothpicks and they nailed it! The kindergarteners did such a magnificent job. We are so proud of the creativity and working hard to solve how it could stand or stay together as a structure.

But here are some activities to help kids keep it all fresh while we are away from school for these next few weeks! Keep those letters, numbers, and high frequency words rolling through their minds all break long all while having some fun!

You can fill it with words, letters, numbers... whatever your child may need work on.

Sometimes learning is messy! Break out the shaving cream on your table, and have your kiddo write out their sight words with their finger. They can also do this while practicing letters and numbers and sounding out simple CVC words like "cat" "dog" "mom" "pan".... etc.

A sand or salt box is another great tool to use, and a little less messy than shaving cream. Fill a small box or cookie tray with sand or salt. The feel of the rough sand or salt helps kinesthetic learners memorize the words.

Bend letters out of pipe cleaners...use them to have kids create upper and lower case letters.

This one is great because you can change up what you put in here and even move to sight words. You’ll need a gallon bag with a ziplock top. Add letters written on pieces of paper, magnetic letters, scrabble tiles, or anything else you can think of with letters. Then fill the bag with rice or oatmeal and seal it. Kids dig through the rice through the bag to find the letters. When they find them, they write down the letter they find until they locate all 26 letters of the alphabet.

Go on an ABC scavenger hunt. The fun part about this for grown-ups is that there is no prep. Tell kids to go find objects that start with each letter of the alphabet. To make this game take longer, designate spots for them to bring each item back—one at a time. Every item must be approved before they can move on to the next.

• Language development – Counting our loud and pronunciation of numbers.
• Maths – Recognising numbers and their name.
• Maths – Value of numbers, ‘how many’, ‘more than’ and ‘less than’.
• Sorting by colour and number.
• Balance – the cardboard rolls can tip over when unbalanced.

Winter is here, so please be sure to dress your children for the weather. We will continue to have outdoor recess as much as possible, but students will not be able to go out if they are not properly dressed for the weather.
