CDW Weekly Wrap-Up
February 9, 2024
New Information from Principal Santa
The Student Council SOUP-er Bowl was a success!
Thank you to all of the students who donated soup cans for the Helping Hands Food Pantry in Hillsdale. Congratulations to Team White, which consisted of 6th and 7th graders, who brought in the most cans!
This Sunday is the Super Bowl! Las Vegas predicts that the 49ers will beat the Chiefs by 2 points, but how about Old Tappan? When polled, 55% of CDW students want the Chiefs to win, with 45% rooting for the 49ers. Will the game go long and enter overtime, or will it be a … swift….game? Either way, enjoy the big game on Sunday!
Town Hall Meetings
On Wednesday, Mr. Lauriello, along with teachers, spoke with each grade level to remind students of specific rules set forth in the CDW Student Handbook. Please reiterate the following rules to your child(ren).
- Cell phones and smartwatches should be turned off and kept in students' lockers from 8:25 AM - 2:56 PM. Cell phones and smartwatches can only be used before and after school.
- Students may not wear hats or hoods in the building.
- No gum is allowed in the building.
- Students should have a water bottle that is appropriate in size and should not be the reason for the disruption of learning. Please make sure that your child(ren)'s bottle with a straw has a cover on it to prevent spills, which is an ongoing safety issue.
Parents/Guardians of students who violate these rules will be contacted.
Sports Equipment Drive: February 16th-March 8th
The National Junior Honor Society students have been starting their Changemaker Projects. One of the groups is doing a Sports Equipment Drive, and they are asking for your help! See the flyer below for more information.
Grade 6 Science
The students in Mr. Johnson's Grade 6 Science classes completed model volcanos for extra credit. Here is the YouTube LINK that was shown on OTBN showing all of the eruptions.
Grade 7 Science
The Grade 7 Scientists in Mr. Gagliano and Ms. Osbahr's classes have been dissecting owl pellets to enhance their understanding about the digestive system. This week, the students have been putting their findings together to reveal what their owl might have eaten.
Lunar New Year in the Media Center
Ms. Franco's class visited the library to listen to a story about Lunar New Year, watch an animated story about the different Zodiac animals of the lunar years, and figure out which animal is their zodiac animal. Students then colored the corresponding zodiac animals. It was so much fun learning about Lunar New Year!
#WinAtSocial Update
Ms. Santa has been visiting all Language Arts classrooms for the last two weeks to talk about learning, growing, and rebounding from the mistakes we all make. During the interactive lesson, the classes discussed making academic, social, time management, and organizational mistakes and learning from them to become wiser and stronger. To end the lesson, the students wrote down advice they would give to a friend who made a mistake.
Want to continue the lesson at home?
Here are some questions you can pose to everyone in the family:
- TOSS UP: Think about a famous person you admire. What's a mistake he/she has openly talked about, and how did he/she learn from it?
- COACH UP: Which app do you think students mess up on the most? What steps can we take to ensure that our online actions and posts don't negatively affect our goals and reputation in the long run?
- HUDDLE UP: When someone messes up, how would you prefer him/her to talk to you so that you both can figure things out and get better from it?
As part of the school's partnership with The Social Institute, you receive exclusive access to the Parent Toolkit, which includes a full library of content specifically for families. All co-created with students and experts around the country.
Platform Playbooks feature expert breakdowns of the most popular apps and platforms and offer tips on how students can use them positively. TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, ChatGPT, Fortnite... the list goes on and on!
Family Huddles help you reinforce the important modern-day life skills that your child is learning at school. These topics align with #WinAtSocial Lessons to extend discussion beyond the classroom and encourage students to huddle with their families.

Join the PTO!
Volunteers play a huge part in the PTO and what we are able to offer our students and teachers. Without volunteers, many of the programs that students, teachers, and families enjoy will not be able to happen. Volunteer descriptions can be found at: OTPTO.org under "More Info" and then "Flyers."
