Falling into February
Dear Skamania Families,
As we move through the month of February, I wanted to take a moment to remind you of some important upcoming dates and events at our school.
Firstly, please mark your calendars for February 16th, which is our snow makeup day. School will be in session on this day to ensure we make the most of our instructional time. Following that, there will be NO SCHOOL on February 19th in observance of Presidents' Day. March 8th will be our next snow makeup day.
Additionally, our After School Clubs will be held on February 26th, March 4th, March 11th, and March 18th from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Remember to return your child's permission slips as soon as possible since clubs are filling up fast. On club days, I encourage you to send in a snack for your child, and please remember to pick them up promptly at 3:30 PM as school transportation is not provided.
We're also excited to announce our Dr. Seuss Breakfast on March 1st from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. All are welcome to join us for this fun event celebrating the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss!
Mark your calendars! From March 25th to March 29th, we're delighted to announce our highly anticipated book fair. This year, we're proud to collaborate with North Bank Books in Stevenson. Not only does this partnership support a local business that has been a steadfast supporter of Skamania, but it also allows us to bring exciting new books directly to our students' fingertips! The book fair will open each morning at 7:30 AM and remain accessible during dismissal and conference times in the afternoons. We warmly invite you to join us in supporting both our school and our beloved local bookstore!
Finally, remember to set your clocks forward on March 10 for daylight saving time. I am truly excited for longer (and hopefully warmer) days to come!
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Warm regards,
Katie Chavarria

Camp Invention @ Skamania School
Camp Invention® is coming to Skamania School! In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame®, Skamania School is pleased to offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering kindergarten through sixth grade. This exciting, weeklong summer adventure provides opportunities for open-ended, hands-on exploration of science, technology, engineering and more! Rotating through a variety of exciting activities each day, children have fun collaborating with friends, thinking creatively and inventing their own solutions to real-world challenges.
The week begins on 6/24 with Mrs. Chavarria serving as Director. The all-new 2024 program will thrill campers with an expedition full of far-reaching explorations, fascinating discoveries and exhilarating “a-ha” moments!
During this dynamic, high-energy program, young innovators will:
- Develop their own sports ball and customize a light-up game with a unique brand and logo as they explore athletics, design and innovation
- Discover the science of light through illuminating inventions and fluorescent animals, then build a one-of-a-kind Glow Box using circuitry and ultraviolet light
- Embark on an epic global operation to tackle water challenges around the world, learning the role that water plays with the help of a robotic lab-on-wheels
- Star as a contestant on a prototyping game show, molding and shaping ideas into awesome inventions using everyday items and a DIY toolbox

Updates from the School...
- If you have any donations for the school store, we would love to have them! Please send them in with your child or drop them off with Mrs. Chavarria.
- Students should only bring water bottles in the classroom. We have had some issues with juice and sports drinks that spill and leave a sticky mess. Students may bring these options to drink at lunch, if desired.
- If you are planning to pick up another child from their bus stop, please ensure you have communicated with the child's parent and received permission to do so.
- Reminder that toys and stuffed animals are only allowed at school when specifically permitted by a teacher (Stuffie Celebration Day, etc.). Trading (Pokemon) cards are not permitted in school.
- We still try to go outside most days. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.
- If you need to make an afternoon transportation change, please contact the office before 2 pm (12 pm on Wednesdays).
- Cell phones must remain in backpacks during the school day. Phones that are taken out will be held in the office until the end of the day.
Farewell...and Welcome Back!
Earlier this month, Skamania School said farewell to Mrs. Becker, our school counselor, who made the heartfelt decision to resign from her position to prioritize spending more time with her family. Her compassion and support have left a mark on the school community, and she will be greatly missed.
We also had the opportunity to bring a familiar face back to Skamania. Chris Selcer, who served as Skamania's counselor during the 2021-22 school year, will be joining us on a part-time basis through his position at ESD 112. Chris's return brings a sense of familiarity and reassurance, and the school eagerly anticipates the positive impact he will undoubtedly make in his new role. Chris will meet with select students in one-on-one and group sessions as well as be available to support our Skamania family in any way he can.
