Academic, Athletics, and Activities Updates
Our class of 2024 enjoyed a outstanding sunrise on Friday. Later that night our Football team improved their overall record to 2-1 with a victory over South Albany. This past week our State Champion Boys soccer team improved their record to 4-1 with a 6-0 victory over the Newberg Tigers.
This week we are hosting several events here at McKay. Girls soccer hosts Gresham High School on Tuesday afternoon. Later in the week volleyball will host Lebanon with the varsity match starting at 6:30 pm. Next week is McKay's Homecoming Week, be on the lookout for communication.
Counseling Corner
Pending Releases
If you have requested a release, you will see it as “Pending Release” in your schedule. This is because all parents and guardians and students must sign a new Release form in order for the release to be approved. After it is signed by you, the parent, your counselor and Assistant Principal Aaron Johnson, only THEN will we change it to officially say “Release”. If you haven’t completed and turned in this form yet, you can find it in the student center. The deadline was September 15th. If you haven’t completed it yet, you still can, but just know that counselors will convert that “Pending Release” into a class if you don’t turn in your form.
Parking in and around Campus
Effective starting 9/11/2023, students who drive to school and need a parking space will need to purchase a parking permit from the Bookkeeper. This parking permit will be required in every vehicle on campus. If a vehicle does not have a permit, a written warning will be issued and ticketing will begin after that. Students need to park on campus rather than in neighborhoods near campus. Neighbors have been encouraged to contact Salem PD if there is a car parked near their home. Vehicles may be ticketed and/or towed.
Unxecused Absences and Tardy Slips
At McKay our expectation is that all students are present and on time each day for each period. For that reason we have systems set up like our phone dialer, check in and check out process, as well as mandatory tardy slips to enter class. These system's work to motivate our students to stay moving while in the halls. The past two weeks we have been allowing for our students to get reacquainted with the flow of the halls. With that in mind we want to communicate that we will now begin to track Unexcused Absences and Tardy marks for each student. If your student(s) accrue a certain amount of either they will be expected to make up for the time missed. Once students are in the school, we will do what we can to keep them on time all day. We are asking that families adjust to our "morning rush," by leaving earlier, or allowing your student to exit the car prior to arriving at the front of the building. Please be on the lookout for communication regarding your student's attendance habits. We know that any loss of instructional time has the potential to impact your students, let's continue to work together to get the best from our students.
