Our Veterans Day Program is this Friday!
Students should come to school on Friday ready to attend a somber assembly to honor our communities veterans. The assembly will be VERY different than the House Celebration from the end of the 1st quarter. That one was more like a pep rally, this one will be more dignified and reserved. I am asking the students to come to school dressed in patriotic colors:
- 6th graders wear RED
- 7th Graders wear WHITE
- 8th Graders wear BLUE
If you have a veteran coming, please help them get to the library at GMSE between 8:20 - 8:40 am on Friday, November 10. We will help them the rest of the way. Our assembly will begin at 9 am and lasts approximately one hour.
6th Grade Update
Math 6
Students have begun writing and evaluating expressions with variables. Students received their Chapter 3 Study Guide (in Classkick) on Friday in preparation for our Chapter 3 Assessment on Friday 11/10.
ACE 6/7
Students have been working on subtracting integers using the concept of hot and cube cubes. They took their unit 4 assessment on 11/3, which will come home this week and covered multiplying fractions & mixed numbers, choosing appropriate scales, creating graphs, and solving numerical expressions. We will be working on multiplying and dividing with decimals - please feel free to work with your child on the standard algorithm.
ACE 7/8
Ace 7/8 students are starting Chapter 5, Systems of Equations. We will work to compare two situations and find when one situation is better than the other.
ELA
ELA students are continuing to study fictional texts of their choice. We have looked at character (traits, likable v. less likable, pressures and motivations) and how those elements impact our stories. As we keep moving forward, students will dig into setting (how characters impact setting, sometimes the mood of a setting can shift) in each of their books. In writing, students are working on crafting a thesis and claims for real-life topics, for example, Should schools do away with homework? We are working towards creating strong arguments, learning how to best argue and debate our viewpoints.
ACE ELA
Students have been continuing to study fiction literature. Analyzing characters in fiction stories (including their virtues and vices, pressures and motivations) has been addressed. Next, students will be studying the setting of fiction texts: how characters can impact the setting, the different levels of setting, and how the atmosphere of a place impacts characters. On the writing side, students are collecting evidence and writing based on prompts. Additionally, determining the meaning of unknown words using context clues is becoming our focus for word work.
Science
Students continue to matter as we measure and observe properties of matter including density, mass, and volume! Please make sure your child has working headphones on a daily basis.
Social Studies
Students will continue to investigate world religions that later will be applied to our ancient civilizations in the Eastern Hemisphere. Also the students will study the history of Veterans Day and the significance of the Medal of Honor. We will conclude this week with our GMSE Veterans Day assembly. Thank you to all our Veterans! Please check that your student has earbuds or a headset for class.
7th Grade Update
Ace 7/8 students are starting Chapter 5, Systems of Equations. We will work to compare two situations and find when one situation is better than the other.
7th Science - Energy Assessment will be 11/15. Study Guide will come out 11/9.
Math 7 will be receiving a study guide next week for an upcoming assessment on Ch 3 concepts:
- Simplify expressions with multiple operations by identifying and evaluating groups
- Subtract and multiply positive and negative numbers.
- Build (compose) and take apart (decompose) numbers and lengths.
- Divide with fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals.
They will have an opportunity to work through a team challenge to help prepare them! Remind your student they can be playing ST Math at home. Earning additional minutes and puzzles can lead to house points!
7th grade ELA students are in book clubs and you should see lots of reading at home and thoughtful jots about their book.
8th Grade Update
Quarter 2 is officially underway! Remind your students to stay on top of their homework and start the quarter off on the right foot. 9 weeks will fly by faster than we realize!
There is an Eastland Career Center Field Trip coming up November 30th for all 8th grade students. Permission slips will be sent out this week to parents, so keep an eye out for those and get them signed and sent back with your child at the earliest convenience!
