We want to welcome Bailey Schroeder, Office Manager and Sarah Dannehl, Office Associate to the Gage County Extension Office.

Bailey is the Office Manager in the Gage County Extension Office. She is a recent graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor’s in Animal Science and minor in the Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars program. While growing up on her family’s cow/calf operation, she was involved in 4-H and FFA in Gage County and is excited to be back. In her spare time, she enjoys helping with her family’s cattle operation, going to cattle shows, and spending time with family and friends. Contact Bailey at bailey.schroeder@unl.edu.

Sarah is the Office Associate in the Gage County Extension Office. She is a recent graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor's in Animal Science. She is originally from Bertrand, NE where she grew up on her family farm and ranch. She is a Phelps-Gosper County 4-H and FFA alum where she showed cattle and horses. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys riding horses, playing piano, and spending time back home on the farm. Contact Sarah at sarah.dannehl@unl.edu.

The Gage County Extension Board will meet Tuesday, February 9 at noon at the Extension Office located at 1115 W. Scott Street, Beatrice. This meeting is open to the public and an agenda is on file at the office.

Nebraska farmers are conducting research across the state in cooperation with Nebraska Extension. There are 100+ projects this year! Come hear what we are learning, meet other innovative farmers, and consider conducting research on your own farm. The meeting will take place on February 25 from 8:30 am-12:30 pm in the Gage County Extension Meeting Room. Pre-registration is required as seating is limited. If you have questions contact Nathan Mueller at 402-821-2151.

Check the date on your Commercial Pesticide License, if it expires in 2021, attend a class to avoid re-testing. Beatrice classes are February 4, February 16, March 9, and March 18. Register now at pested.unl.edu as spots are limited. For new applicators, the Beatrice class is March 16.

Join this virtual workshop via Zoom Friday, February 19 & 26 from 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM CT geared towards nursery and green industry professionals, public works employees, landscape managers, arborists, tree board volunteers, and cemetery & grounds keepers. Topics include turfgrass diseases, preventing and resolving wildlife-turfgrass complications, trees in a changing environment, and common insecticides used to treat Emerald Ash Borer.

Register by February 12th. Cost: $20 for one day, $30 for both days.

‘Right Plant, Right Place’ is a very important aspect of planting and it is a great time to start thinking about it while building on what I wrote in my last article. The seed catalogs are arriving and planting ideas are forming. However, there are things to keep in mind when planning your garden or new plants for an established garden.

Enrollment is open for 2021 Gage County 4-H. All 4-H youth (ages 8-18), Clover Kids (ages 5-7), and leaders/volunteers are required to enroll online every year. Enrollment deadline is June 15. We encourage all members to enroll using a computer and not your mobile device. This site is not mobile-friendly and can cause some issues when it comes time to pay your dues online. Enrollment instructions for new members can be found at the Extension Office or online at gage.unl.edu. Call Jacie at 402-223-1384 with any enrollment questions.

$12 dues must be paid online at the conclusion of the enrollment process. **No enrollment fee for Clover Kids. Please follow these special Clover Kid enrollment instructions.

Projects will continue to be cleared from 4HOnline annually. Project history per member can be found under Member Reports in your family account. Call the Extension Office if you have questions.

If part of your New Year’s resolution involved cutting out carbohydrates, I hope you’ll reconsider.

Carbohydrates (we’ll call them carbs) have gotten a bad rap with the rise of popular diets like Atkins, Paleo and Keto—leaving people understandably confused about their place in a healthy lifestyle.

The biggest thing to remember is that carbs are a broad category of food with not all types being created equal. It’s the type, quality and quantity that ultimately affect one’s health.

Keep your friends close, and your farmers closer.
