Vikings Choose Well!
If you’ve been reading my letters each week, you’ve come to know me as a sports fan, an English teacher, and a reader. This week, one of my highlights was kind of a full circle moment for me. I grew up in West Texas in the 80’s, so when the book Friday Night Lights was published, I recognized the names of many coaches and players. There is a part in the book where a team is actually eliminated from the playoffs by a coin toss. I remember that happening. (You can actually see the historic coin toss on YouTube)
Today, 36 years later, I got to participate in an exciting coin toss of my own for the chance to host our Team Tennis Playoff match vs Wimberley. Coach Anderson and I FaceTimed the Wimberley coach, and I got to flip the coin while the Wimberley coach called it. Coach Anderson kept his camera on the coin as it landed on heads…their coach called “tails”. YES!
Our kids and coaches have worked really hard this season for their fourth place finish and the right to play another week and host the Bi-District round on our home court. Winning the flip was exciting for us, but it really came down to a choice their coach made. In a quick few seconds, he lost the chance to play in front of his hometown. It’s hard to not think that he wished later he would’ve said “heads”.
Choices are powerful, and our administration has had several conversations this week about making good choices. As adults, most of us understand the correlation between choices and consequences. As young adults, our students are still navigating that. Developmentally, it’s appropriate. That’s where parents, teachers, and caring adults come in to help them navigate living with the consequences.
When children are given the opportunity to make decisions—whether big or small—they learn critical life skills such as problem-solving, self-discipline, and responsibility. As they grow older, more complex decisions teach them to weigh consequences, think critically, and manage their emotions. Each day we have choices to make about our attitudes, how hard we work, and how we spend our precious time. We want to work together to help our Vikings learn the power of their choice and to help them choose well and wisely now and in the future.
In “Despicable Me”, the main character, Gru, had a choice to make- follow his villainous ways or chart a new and better path. With the help of his Minions, he started using his powerful intellect and skills for good. As you can see, my Admin Team and I made the choice this week to join the fun by dressing up the spirit day this week! I love my team, and we love our LVHS AeTT!
What a gift it is to be able to partner with such an amazing team of parents and educators as we work together to help our Vikings see that they too have agency and the power to choose to give their very best each day!

PSAT Day is Wednesday, October 23rd!
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is more than good practice for the SAT, and the scores are more than just a number. With your results your student can:
- Track progress from PSAT 8/9 through SAT.
- Get insights into areas they need to work on to prepare for the SAT.
- Become eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
- Qualify for other scholarship money.
Learn more about the PSAT/NMSQT here.
All LVHS students in grades 9-11 will take the PSAT on October 23. You don't need to do anything to sign your student up. We have loaded BlueBook on all school issued Ipads and purchased digital tests for all students.
You can help by reminding your student get a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast before the test, making sure Ipads are charged and ready to go, and encouraging them to take the practice test between now and test day. Please reach out to Ms. Kinslow with any PSAT related questions.

PLAN AHEAD: Senior Pep Rally and Senior Night
We are so excited to celebrate the amazing Class of 2025 on Friday, November 1st with a few annual traditions. See below for important information so you don't miss a thing!

Senior Night for Fall Sports - We will recognize Senior athletes and their parents in the following sports BEFORE Friday night's game on November 1st. Seniors and their parents will need to purchase a ticket online to attend. Parents, please plan to arrive early and meet on the track near the field house to line up- (and in this order):
Football
Trainers
Cheerleaders
Valkyries
Cross Country (Girls and Boys)
Fall Tennis (Girls and Boys)
Senior Night for Band @ halftime- Senior Band Parents, please come down onto the track when your students move onto the field for their normal performance.
Senior Walk @ the end of the game- This tradition is for ALL SENIORS. After the football game, an announcement will be made for Seniors to make their way to the visitor side of the field and facing the home stands. Senior Parents will line up on the home sideline facing and across from their Seniors. Seniors will grasp hands and walk across the field to music they've selected. Then hugs and tears can commence when they make their way across to parents. It's a special tradition. If you don't want to attend the entire football game, but want to participate in the Senior Walk, please plan to be at the field around 9pm. There will be no charge at that point.
Lastly, Seniors should plan to wear WHITE shirts to school on Friday and to the Senior Walk, if possible. Just one more way to be a unified Class of 2025! We look forward to celebrating this amazing group of students!
