Weekly News, Updates, and Opportunities from SRMS
A Message from Dr. Ortiz, Principal of Sandy Run
Good morning, Sandy Run Families,
While this week has certainly been a unique one with the weather, it has been full of exciting events, nonetheless. While students had an early dismissal last Friday, our staff spent the afternoon engaged in meaningful professional development around connecting with our students and creating a school culture that best supports our students. Monday's holiday featured some exciting community events around the district, and were proud that Mr. Meyer and the SRMS Student Council hosted a Martin Luther King Day of Service event at Sandy Run where dozens of students, families, and staff members came together to collect goods to provide to local charities and families. Thanks to all who attended. Our boys basketball team's season got underway with a couple of strong performances in scrimmages this week - we look forward to an exciting season ahead!
We hope that you and your family are staying warm and safe on this snow day - this week is certainly making up for the past year or two and the lack of winter weather! In between sledding, shoveling, and relaxing, it could be a good time for students to check their Schoology pages as the end of the marking period is quickly approaching. If students have any questions or concerns, they should contact their teachers to make a plan and ensure their success. Please see the updates below for important information. Stay warm and I hope you enjoy this extended, snowy weekend.
Sincerely,
Dan Ortiz
Coach Doan and the 8th Grade Basketball Team Huddles
The SRMS Boys Basketball Teams had two hard fought scrimmages this week to begin their season. Coach Doan and Coach Leslie are looking forward to a great season, and the crowd has given the Cardinals a strong home-court advantage. Good luck this season!
SRMS Student Council MLK Day of Service
On Monday afternoon, dozens of students, families, and staff members gathered at Sandy Run as part of the district's annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. Students collected hundreds of toys, clothes, and other essentials to deliver to local charities that benefit our own community and surrounding communities.
January's PBIS Focus on Leadership in Honor of Dr. King
This month's Sandy Run value of focus is around student-leadership. The timing of this value of focus was tied to Dr. King's life-long work that still leaves a legacy today. We worked through ways that leadership can shine through in our students' everyday efforts at Sandy Run and we are proud of the work our middle schoolers do each day.
