BUE Family Newsletter

We invite you to join us for the BUE Annual Bicycle Derby.

Each year, our local Kiwanis Club and community partners sponsor a Bicycle Derby at BUE. The purpose of the Derby is to encourage children to safely ride their bikes, support physical activity in our youth, and ensure all children have the opportunity to learn bike riding skills.

Students will learn the basic rules of the safely riding the road with their bicycles, including hand signaling and safe riding habits.

There will be a short obstacle course, with ramps and cones to practice bike skills.

We will have a bike maintenance station to perform basic bicycle maintenance free of charge (brakes, chains, reflectors, etc).

Alpine Bank is serving free hot dogs, chips and drinks for the community.

There will be prizes and 2 free new bicycles given away in a drawing!

Each year, BUE students benchmark test in Reading and Math to help our school track student growth. The beginning of the year benchmark will be next week for both STAR and NWEA. Kids will not test everyday, however in order to get the whole school tested we have a 2 week window. Most students will test for a total of 1.5 - 2 hours during this time (this includes the total time for both the Reading and Math assessments). Some students will take longer and some students will finish quicker.

Reading:

• 2nd and 3rd Grade students take the Star Early Literacy Assessment. It is designed to quickly measure Pre-K‒3 students’ early literacy skills with a computer-adaptive assessment designed just for young learners.
• 4th and 5th Grade students take NWEA Reading Assessments. It is is a research-based, computer-adaptive literacy assessment that precisely measures growth and proficiency in reading — and provides insights to help teachers tailor reading instruction.

Math:

• All grades (2nd-5th) take NWEA Math Assessments. The the Reading Assessment, the math assessment is a research-based, computer-adaptive assessment that precisely measures growth and proficiency in mathematics —and provides insights to help teachers tailor math instruction.

Beginning of the year data will be shared during Parent Teacher Conferences - November 6th and 7th.

You can request beginning of the year scores prior to Parent Teacher Conferences by contacting your student's teacher.

BUE teachers send home large white envelopes every Tuesday with important information. Please check back packs each week and review the information in these folders. They will be school, classroom, and possibly community information each. This is also a great way for you to send a note back to you student's teacher.

Please also check for homework!

Make sure to send Tuesday Folders back to school the following day.

Dear Families,

Please note that October 6th is an early release day for students. BUE Students will be released at 11:30 a.m.

• Parent Pickup is 11:30 a.m.
• Busses will run at 11:30 a.m.

Students will be served Breakfast and Lunch on October 6th.

We encourage you to make the appropriate childcare arrangements needed, so this does not catch you off guard!

WHY? : You may be asking why we are doing an early release on on Homecoming?

In the past, students at CFL, GVMS, and BUE have not been able to participate in homecoming activities such as the Homecoming Parade due to school dismissal times. Many schools across the country utilize a 1/2 day schedule on their Homecoming Friday to encourage participation and school pride. We are excited to participate at a higher level than we have in the past. Look for the BUE Float during the Homecoming Parade!

Important Note: BUE will complete a Fire Drill and Safety Lock Down each month. We do not post these dates times for safety reasons.

Our free breakfast and lunch program is a yearly grant process. Our district has qualified again for a free breakfast and lunch program for SY 2023-2024.

To continue to qualify for this grant, we need all families to please fill out an application for free or reduced meals, regardless of family income. The application packet will be sent home the first day of school and it can also be found using this link: Nutrition "Bites" . This will help us to continue to qualify for this program for next school year. Thank you!

• Breakfast Program: All students can receive breakfast free of charge. It is important that your child arrives at school on time as breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m.

• Lunch Program: All students can receive lunch free of charge. If your child brings lunch from home, please make sure it does NOT need to be heated in a microwave as there are no microwaves available.

Please do not send soda pop in your child’s school lunch. We ask that you send a healthier choice such as juice, water, or milk.

Parents wishing to eat lunch with their child may do so, however to be in the school during the school day requires a background check (see the section above on school safety).

Please call the school office by 9:00am if you would like to order a hot lunch. The charge for an adult lunch is $4.25 and for a visiting child it is $2.75. Please remember that the school only accepts cash or a check for payment.

Menus for the new schools year will be found on our school district Nutrition Website. They are not currently updated yet - but staff are working on them.

Meal Prices for Visitors:

Student Lunch $2.75

Milk $0.70

Adult Lunch $4.25

School Breakfast and Lunch menus are currently being created and will be updated for the start of the school year. If you are ever looking for the breakfast and lunch menus, please visit our district Nutrition Department Website where you can link directly to each month's menus.

Please keep in mind that menus have the potential to change A LOT depending on staffing issues, and product availability. Our Nutrition Department does their best to honor the posted menus, however they can be heavily impacted for a variety of reasons. G16 Dress Code Policy JICA

Dressing for school in an appropriate and respectful manner is important to limit distractions, encourage kindness among classmates, and enhance school safety and sense of belonging for everyone. The following items are deemed disruptive to the classroom environment or to the maintenance of a safe and orderly school and are not acceptable in school buildings, on school grounds, or at school activities:

• Shorts, dresses, skirts or other similar clothing shorter than three inches above the knee cap

• Sunglasses and/or hats worn inside the building

• Inappropriately sheer, tight or low-cut clothing (e.g., midriffs, halter-tops, backless clothing, tube tops, garments made of fishnet, mesh or similar material, muscle tops, etc.) that bare or expose traditionally private parts of the body including, but not limited to, the stomach, buttocks, back and breasts

• Tank tops or other similar clothing with straps narrower than 1.5 inches in width

• Any clothing, paraphernalia, grooming, jewelry, hair coloring, accessories, or body adornments that are or contain any advertisement, symbols, words, slogans, patches, or pictures that:

• Refer to drugs, tobacco, alcohol, or weapons

• Are of a sexual nature

• By virtue of color, arrangement, trademark, or other attribute denote membership in gangs which advocate drug use, violence, or disruptive behavior

• Are obscene, profane, vulgar, lewd, or legally libelous

• Threaten the safety or welfare of any person

• Promote any activity prohibited by the student code of conduct

• Otherwise disrupt the teaching-learning process

Hats:

• Hats may only be worn outside the building (except for special dress-up days)

Shoes:

• Wheelie tennis shoes MUST have the wheels removed

• Sandals are ok but you must have tennis shoes for PE

• Flip flops are discouraged as they tend to get broken at school. Children trip and fall in them often getting hurt on the playground or going up and down stairs.

Students who wear inappropriate clothing will be required to change clothes (BUE keeps freshly washed options in the office) or they can call home for parents to bring a change of clothes. Please don’t allow children to wear excessive make-up, as it is a distraction in school and has resulted in students being unkind to each other.
