Spring Break & Calendar Updates
Additionally, the Superintendent and staff presented updates to the calendar to the Board of Education on March 8 identifying potential changes to the end of this school year, pending approval by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Board of Education of St. Mary’s County. These changes are based on a mild winter - and therefore no snow days this year, as well as recent guidance from MSDE that allows for the use of virtual learning days in our calendar. We encourage you to view the March 8 Board Meeting presentation and provide input through this brief survey.
Update from the School Nurse
Vision and hearing screenings will be ongoing for the remainder of the school year. Please reach out to our nursing staff if you have any questions.

A moment in history featuring: Bette Midler
Bette Midler (/bɛt/;[1] born December 1, 1945) is an American singer, actress, comedian and author.[2] Throughout her career, which spans over five decades, Midler has received numerous accolades, including four Golden Globe Awards, three Grammy Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards and a Kennedy Center Honor, in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards and a British Academy Film Award.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Midler began her professional career in several off-off-Broadway plays, prior to her engagements in Fiddler on the Roof and Salvation on Broadway in the late 1960s. She came to prominence in 1970 when she began singing in the Continental Baths, a local gay bathhouse where she managed to build up a core following. Since 1970, Midler has released 14 studio albums as a solo artist, selling over 30 million records worldwide, and has received four Gold, three Platinum, and three Multiplatinum albums by RIAA.[3][4] Many of her songs became chart hits, including her renditions of "The Rose", "Wind Beneath My Wings", "Do You Want to Dance", "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", and "From a Distance". She won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "The Rose", and Record of the Year for "Wind Beneath My Wings".
Midler made her starring film debut with the musical drama The Rose (1979), which won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, as well as a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She went on to star in numerous films, including Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), Ruthless People (1986), Outrageous Fortune (1987), Big Business (1988), Beaches (1988), Hocus Pocus (1993), The First Wives Club (1996), The Stepford Wives (2004), Parental Guidance (2012), and The Addams Family (2019). Midler also had starring roles in For the Boys (1991) and Gypsy (1993), winning two additional Golden Globe Awards for these films and receiving a second Academy Award nomination for the former.
In 2008, Midler signed a contract with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for a residency, Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On, which ended in 2010. She starred in the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!, which began previews in March 2017 and premiered at the Shubert Theatre in April 2017.[5][6] The show was her first leading role in a Broadway musical.[7] Midler received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance.

Maryland School Survey - All students in grades 9-11
State law requires that all public schools in Maryland survey students about school climate. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of each school’s learning environment so that schools can promote a climate that supports student learning. All students, grades 9 through 11, will take the Maryland School Survey per MSDE. The survey will ask students about topics such as student engagement, interactions with adults and with other students in the school, the school environment, bullying, and safety. The survey will not ask about a student’s personal experiences, and students will not be asked to provide any information that might violate their privacy.
Students will complete the survey during regular school hours during the testing window (February 21 through April 21) in their Science class. If a student does not have a science class in their schedule, they will be contacted by Ms. Kiehlmeier about another time to complete the survey.
Please read this letter for more information.

Counseling Corner
Counselors have been registering students for next school year. We have registered all of the 9th grade students, and most of 10th grade. We will finish up with all students by March 29th. If your student was absent during registration, we will reach out to the student and complete the registration for courses for next school year. If your student needs to request a change to those course requests, there is a form he/she can pick up in the guidance office, complete and return. Course change request forms, need a parent signature. Parents and students are able to review course requests for next school year in HAC. Please log into HAC, go to the Classes Tab, Schedule Tab - then scroll down to see the list of course requests for next school year.
If you need a letter of recommendation from your school counselor, please use this link, Student Recommendation Request, make a copy of this google document and then share it with your counselor once you have completed it. Please include a resume as well to your counselor. Counselors are not included in your teacher recommendations for common applications, our letters are considered “Counselor Evaluations.”
ATTENTION SENIORS! Any senior who is in need of a mid-year transcript sent to a college, must make the request in Naviance. Mid-year information will not be sent until grades are finalized and a GPA calculation update is completed. Our goal is to have this updated so we can begin sending information on or about February 10th.
