Mountain View teacher receives national award for helping students thrive
This week, Mountain View Middle School teacher Tammy Notehelfer was surprised with the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt National Lighthouse Award, a national award that recognizes teachers who have positively affected students, other teachers, and their communities. Tammy was selected from 500 applications for her work in the MMS reading intervention program, where she helps students grow and thrive.
Tammy has worked at Mountain View Middle School since 2016. She believes in her students to take their next best step in class each day.
"I watch it change these kids’ confidence levels. I watch it change their mindset about their future. I have kids who couldn’t read who now can. And it’s because kids are amazing and we just forget sometimes that they can do much more than we thought they were capable of," Tammy said.
The person who nominated Tammy for the award said: “Tammy Notehelfer exemplifies all Teacher Lighthouse Attributes, but a few stand out. Our area has seen a large influx of students from Ukraine and many of these students have been placed with Tammy. She is an inventive teacher, using numerous tools including individualized instruction, classroom culture, and rewards to make personal and positive connections with each student, guiding them through uncertain times. She is a constant and consistent mentor in these students' lives. Tammy also empowers others through example and resilience; even in the face of her own personal struggles, she is seen as a leader by her district colleagues.”
Thank you, Tammy, for being a mentor and cheerleader for our students!

Sumner Rotary donates dictionaries
A longstanding tradition, Sumner Rotary donated more than 750 dictionaries to all third grade students during recent presentations at each school.
Even while so many educational resources are now accessed online, students continue to find excitement in this paper format. Rotary members like to point out fun facts in the dictionary, such as the longest word. Did you know the longest word has a whopping 1,909 letters?!
