Senior Countdown

Seniors,

You are now on the home stretch towards graduation, your final semester is here. Graduation is June 14th at 6:30PM at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup. All the details and logistics of graduation can seem overwhelming, but don't worry we are here to help you each step of the way. Here are some thoughts to help you get organized:

What should I have done already?

• Completed your FAFSA or WASFA (Required for Fife Scholarship Foundation)
• Ordered your Cap and Gown
• Started plans for your next step after high school (college applications, military, apprenticeship, job applications, etc.)

What are your next steps?

• Be sure to to have completed your Xello lessons for your High School and Beyond Plan
• Complete your Fife Scholarship Application (opens March 1)
• Work hard in your classes to ensure you meet credit requirements
• Make sure you have completed your WA State History requirement

What is on the horizon?

• In April we begin a series of senior meetings with myself and Mrs. Thomas to guide graduates through the last couple months leading to graduation.
• Be looking for information regarding Prom, Spring Fling, Honor Grad Night, Senior Awards Night, Decision Day, Grad Night Party, and other senior activities.

Do you need help completing your Financial Aid application? Our FHS Career & College Specialist, Mrs. Thomas, is a great resource to help walk you through the application. WSAC’s 12th Year Campaign is hosting free, virtual financial aid events. The next event is coming up on February 22. More information, including other events and registration, can be found on our events website.

Are you planning on going into medicine? Being a nurse, doctor, radiologist, hospital administration, etc?

Attend the upcoming Ready Set College workshop on February 3 from 6-7:30pm. Choose from four workshops from experts in college & career pathways, funding, and college readiness so you can be prepared for what comes next.

Washington College Grant (WCG) gives more money to more people for more kinds of education and training beyond high school. WCG is not reserved for valedictorians or athletes—it is available to all eligible Washington residents, including undocumented students. If you meet the residency and income requirements, you have money waiting for you.

Washington College Grant can help you access many types of education and training:

• Public and private colleges and universities
• Workforce and training programs
• Approved apprenticeship programs

WCG amounts vary based on income, family size, and program cost. An eligible student from a family of four with income of $56,000 or less per year would get a full award. What does that mean? For example, public college tuition would likely be free for a family with three children and a single parent making $25 per hour. For middle-income families, grant amounts are lower. But even someone from a family of four making up to $102,000 per year can get some money to help pay for college or training.

Students and families can use the financial aid calculator to estimate their potential WCG award, but the only way to know for sure whether you qualify is to apply for financial aid. Applications for the 2022-23 academic year are now open.

Have you been in foster care? Or were you homeless without a parent or guardian? The Passport to Careers program helps Washington students who have been homeless or in foster care prepare for careers.

Eligible students can get money to put toward the costs of earning a college certificate or degree, or to help pay for job training through a pre-apprenticeship or apprenticeship program. Passport also connects you with experts to help answer questions and navigate your pathway.
