Be A Guardian
Be A Guardian - Be Gracious
- We can only understand where we are if we know how far we've come.
- Do everything possible to make the relationship we have with ourselves amazing.
- Most successful individuals focus on the process, not the prize.
- Being cool comes with the heaviness of living up to the expectations of others.
- Your followers won't believe what you say unless it matches what you do and what you are.
- The masks we wear, the stories we tell ourselves, and the labels we hide behind. Every day becomes a search for truth and answers.
- The true value of information comes down to how you use it. Translate information into knowledge.
- A large part of leadership is recognizing that your fruit often grows on other people's trees.
“If you’re afraid to fail, you’ll never succeed.” – Dan Gable

Greetings Sports Fans!
The Winter Season is upon us and we are off and running. We have a record number of student-athletes participating in a winter sport. The season is shaping up to be an exciting one. This edition of the IBW Weekly is dedicated to our Winter Preview. Below are some notes from our coaches.
Great to Be A Guardian!

WINTER SEASON PREVIEWS
Basketball - Men
The 2023-2024 season is upon us.
A planned event now going on for multiple years, the boys varsity team is finally able to make it happen. Boys Varsity Basketball will be traveling to Oakland, California to play four games in the Damien Lillard Classic Basketball tournament from December 27th to December 30th.
Leadership is invaluable! Experience is key! The team is filled with senior returners and last years captains in Jacey Canalin and Lucas Devlin. Jacey will lead the charge on both ends by impacting the game with his leadership, quickness and savvy skills. Lucas is versatile and another good floor leader that will play multiple positions. Cam Hammer is next in line and was selected as our 3rd captain. His toughness and motor are unmatched. Due to unforeseen circumstance last season, Alexander Lynch XII is back in the line up. QB1 for the football team, Spencer Reid is also back after taking a year off. Both players will be looked upon to provide depth in all positions. Max Eichman and Grant Clemo are transfers that provide skill at the forward position that we previously did not have.
With lots of returners, the team is ready to take ownership on our journey. Using our foundation of competing at all costs, working together, and continuing on building strong habits, we believe we can make a big splash on our season.
Basketball - Women
After losing only one senior from last year’s varsity team, the future is bright for the IBW Women’s Basketball program. Thanks to 13 energetic freshmen, there are 35 student-athletes playing women’s basketball this season. Three new volunteers coaches join all but one coach, who returns to teach, mentor and lead our amazing group of student-athletes. The teams have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming season and are excited to get started. The players have embraced our family atmosphere, focused on being warm, welcoming and inclusive. While building and maintaining a competitive environment is important, our core values are to excel in the classroom and in the community as well as on the court. We hope to build on last year’s 3rd place state ranking for average GPA and value the person over the player. All five starters return to our varsity team, led by 2nd Team All-PIL Junior Autumn Hart and 3rd Team All-PIL Senior Dana Savage. Adding to our depth, two players come back from injuries and a senior returned to play after taking last year off. Versatility, unselfishness and a team first attitude has provided a strong base from which to grow and develop throughout the season. Come out and support women’s hoops. Let’s GO GUARDIANS.
Cheer
Cheer is looking forward to a busy but exciting winter season! Not only will cheer support a few different winter sports on the sideline this season, but we will also be competing! We kick off our competition season this Sunday at Liberty High School, where both our varsity and junior high teams will compete in traditional routines. This season will be our most intense competition schedule in years, as we expect to compete almost a dozen between now and the end of the season, sometimes participating in two competitions on the same day! We are so proud of how hard our athletes work, especially with our early morning practices and know they are going to shine over the course of the season!
Swimming
Our team of 24 boys and 36 girls kicked off the season last Wednesday with a meet against both Lincoln and Roosevelt. We had some great early season swims from our veteran swimmers and from some of our newer swimmers who tackled tough events for the first time. Even missing many of our most experienced swimmers we won against Roosevelt but fell short against Lincoln's depth. Our next meet is on Friday December 8th at 6:00pm at Dishman Pool where we will again face off against Lincoln, as well as Jefferson and Grant. We hope to see a lot of familiar faces supporting our team from the stands or volunteering to time. Our final four meets will be after winter break, culminating with JV Districts on February 7th and Varsity Districts on February 9th and 10th. It will be an exciting end to the season and there is a good chance we will be sending a strong contingent to the OSAA State Championships on February 16th including a couple of relays.
Wrestling
The Ida B Wells Guardians Wrestling Teams are training daily (mostly at the former Jackson HS wrestling room) as they prepare for upcoming competitions.
The Guardians Women's Wrestling Team boasts 16 student-athletes this year including state qualifiers Lucia Kidoguchi and Zorina Johnson (returning state runner-up), regional tournament placer Ember Morris, and returning varsity wrestlers Holly Wrigglesworth and Leah Waller. Freshmen Genevie Mondero and Saya Grigg bring years of wrestling experience to this exciting lady Guard lineup. We are especially excited to see excellent progress already from our newcomers: Jane Coffey-Read, Elli Hohl, Shinobi Kong, Zoe Miller, Corinna Murdock, Josephine Rustvold, Maddie Wafer (also swimming!), and Sadie Walsh.
The Guardians Men's Wrestling Team is up to 40 student-athletes including returning state qualifiers Shankara Carson (captain) and Sylas Morrision. Many returning varsity wrestlers are expected to score significant points this year for the Guard. Those include Roman Tubay, Anthony Valenzuela, Bowie Altland, Sam Waxman, Peter Collins, Jack Huntington, Daniel James, and Soren Struble. Freshmen Captain Eilers, Jake Rodriguez, Noah Johnson, and Liam Luke will make an immediate impact on our varsity lineup as they bring years of wrestling experience to this exciting Guard lineup. Our newcomers are already beginning to raise some eyebrows as they see success with just several weeks of training under their belts.

WEEKLY TID-BITS
"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass ― it's learning to dance in the rain."
I. Authenticity Is Everything
There is no one like you. There has never been anyone like you. There shall never be anyone like you.
· Therefore, know yourself.
· Be yourself.
Authenticity is everything.

II. Leadership Liberation
Here are 5 crucial things that leaders must break free from:
1. Free yourself from the need to please others.
2. Free yourself from negative self-talk and limiting thoughts and beliefs.
3. Break free from needing to have all the answers.
4. Break free from your past.
5. The mother of all "Break Free" things is FEAR.
Source: Ginny Clarke, Conscious Leadership Expert
III. Attitude Is Everything
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
· Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.
· It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.
· We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.
· The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.
I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you. We are in charge of our attitudes.

IV. Question
How can I create moments of stillness in my day to reset and refocus?
V. This Week, I Will
1. Trust the timing of my life.
2. Spend time uplifting people.
3. Lean into the present moment.
4. Focus on what is in my control.
5. Distance myself from negative energy.
“Here's what they don't tell you — you're never really going to figure it out. You're never going to figure out the world, or why the things that happened to you happened, or how to ensure that your future is faultless. You're never going to figure out how to perfect your existence, because it was never meant to be perfected. Instead, you will figure out how to move forward, day by day. You will figure out what kind of breakfast you like in the morning, and what kind of people you want by your side. You will figure out the places that make your soul feel at home, and sometimes those places will be human beings. You will figure out what ignites your passion, the things that you could see yourself doing every single day for ten, or twenty, or thirty years. You'll figure out how to say no, and how to stand up for yourself. You'll figure out how to forgive, and let go. You'll figure out exactly how you like to take your coffee. You'll figure out how to walk away, how to heal. You'll figure out how to live with yourself, how to be your own companion. You'll figure out how to be kind to even the most broken parts of yourself. See, you'll figure out how to embrace life. How to truly accept it, as it comes. And it won't always be easy, or clean cut; it won't always make sense, and you won't always have control. But it will be yours. It will be yours.”
