Willow Parent Bulletin # 2

All things Willow
The Willow Way was developed in conjunction with our PBIS program, which is short for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. It's the premise of explicitly teaching expectations and then acknowledging/rewarding them when observed. Your child will experience this throughout his/her time in District 153.
You will also hear us talk about WIN (What I Need) Time and Intervention. Your wildcat will be assessed formally and informally throughout the year. We do this to make sure he/she is making growth and to adjust our instruction according to the date. During WIN time, your child receives small group instruction at his/her specific level. We know every child learns differently and this time allows for targeted instruction right where it's needed.
Pat your self on the back, give your wildcat a hug, and tell each other, "We did it!" Your hard work, in conjunction with the teachers', made this week easier to navigate. It's amazing to see how quickly your child has adapted to this new leaning format. We are in this together and available to help maintain your child's success.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) this week- commonalities
This week's lesson was about promoting an awareness of commonalities in others. We also know that includes being comfortable with yourself and with sharing about yourself. With young students they often fall into two different catagories: they can talk to anyone about anything or conversely can be very shy. We aim to find a happy medium where students have the confidence to speak up and share, while fostering an openness towards respectfully learning about others. As students share their family stories and learn about each other, we see this naturally happen. This lends itself to a tight-knit classroom community. Come to think about it, it also lends itself to better community for us grown ups, too!
Weekly Announcements
Peace, Love and Cupcakes
Homewood-Flossmoor is pleased to be able to present virtual, encore performances of this year's Summer Theatre production of Peace, Love & Cupcakes!
Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. and this Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m.
Based on the bestselling children’s book series, Kylie Carson has a big problem: she’s different, and different isn’t necessarily a good thing in junior high. She loves vampires, zombies and monster movies: one of the many reasons why kids at her new school avoid her.
To sweeten up her image — and to find a place where she belongs — Kylie starts a cupcake club, attended by three other socially invisible girls. The girls forge a powerful friendship, figure out how to create crowd-pleasing cupcakes, and become a booming baking business. But when Meredith (Caroline Bivens), the school's resident Queen Bee, tries to sabotage their efforts, will Kylie have the courage to stand up to the bully and bring the school together?
A musical with an excellent message that celebrates kid power, friendship, and standing up for who you are and what you believe in.
Links to the performances will be posted on our website: hfhighschool.org.
