Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion Families,
We had great participation and a lot of fun for the Crazy Hair Spirit Day last Friday. Students were very creative this year as you can see in the video and photos below! Spirit Days are a fun way to improve school climate. The Student Council votes on the theme for the third Friday of the month. We also had a very successful community building, family-friendly, Bingo Night last Friday. The Cafeteria was packed with more than 300 people for the first in-person Bingo event in three years. Our Alebrije families enjoyed playing Bingo, eating some food, and being together as a school community on campus. A big SHOUT OUT to Unidos PTO Event Chair Kelly Elgabawali for getting prizes and organizing, and to Gracie Centeno and the other 4th grade parents that donated and helped serve the food at Bingo Night! We hope to get a similar turn out for the Unidos PTO Family Dance on February 10th!
This year we are are excited to reclassify 25 Adelante Selby English Learners at the Reclassification Ceremony on January 30th. Reclassification or Redesignation is the process whereby a student is reclassified from English learner (EL) status to Redisignated Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) status. This is a significant accomplishment as RFEP students are considered to be completely fluent (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) in English. Families of the new RFEP students received an individual notification and invitation for the ceremony. Leslie Daniele, the Director of English Leaner Services, gave a presentation on how to support your child at home at our English Advisory Meeting of parents of English learners this morning that was well received. She talked about what it takes to redesignate/reclassify as an English Learner student, shared information about the ELPAC test(which all English Learner students take yearly) and some sample problems from the reading and writing portions of the test, and gave some good ideas on how to support English learners at home as a parent. We know the greatest amount of learning happens for our students from now in January through the Spring Break in April. However, student attendance is key as well so please make sure your students are here every day on time and for the whole day (unless they are sick).
Familias Unidas Parent Workshop Fall/Winter Update
We were very busy this last session of our https://www.unitedthrougheducation.org/ workshop and want to share updates and videos of all the wonderful work of our families in our community.
During this past session of the Familias Unidas workshop, we focused on the importance of reading by creating and maintaining good reading habits. The families learned several reading strategies that help with learning and comprehension. With the generosity of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, families were given Science is Elementary science kits, which is one of our most anticipated classes. Although this workshop was reading and science focused, the families learned about diabetes and the importance of exercising and eating healthfully throughout the course with the support of Sequoia Healthcare District.
This session, we also had guest speakers and partnered with several organizations to share resources that supported our families. We had the honor of having Dr. Bruno from Sequoia Hospital answer questions regarding COVID and the flu which was immensely educational for the families. Knowing more about COVID vaccines and the flu helped the families decrease stress knowing where to go and what to do when they were sick. We also had a guest speaker from Sonrisas Dental Health where our families learned about dental health and which foods cause cavities. This past session, we collaborated with the San Mateo County Parks to offer a field trip to Huddart Park to spend time with family outdoors! While there, our families were led by docents from the Friends of Huddart & Wunderlich Parks on an interpretive hike where our families learned about native plants and animals. We shared pertinent events from the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley as well as resources and family events from both the Redwood City Public Library and San Mateo County Libraries. We are not only creating lifelong learners, but active members of our larger community.
It's truly inspiring to see our families work together. During the workshop, many times we saw big smiles when parents and children were actively working and learning together. Seeing these connections being made demonstrates that our mission is truly being realized- Building a Better Community, One Family at a Time.

In addition, we were able to distribute masks and COVID tests to our families. As a trusted resource in our community, we made many porch deliveries of PPE and COVID tests. We were also able to provide families in need with target gift cards as many in our community are still struggling to meet their basic needs. During the holidays, we worked with several organizations to provide our families money and presents to keep the holiday spirit alive! Although it seems at times the COVID pandemic may be over, our community is still recovering and in need of resources to survive.
We look forward to continuing our partnership so we can better serve our community together!

Redwood City After School Sports
The Redwood City After School Sports Program is a school-based sports program that is provided by the Redwood City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department (PRCS), in collaboration with the South County Sheriff’s Activities League (SC-SAL), and the Redwood City Police Activities League (PAL).
PRCS Schools - Kennedy, McKinley, North Star, Roy Cloud, Roosevelt, Henry Ford, Orion, and Adelante Selby. Currently, 4th/5th grade Basketball is going on and registration is now open for Spring Soccer: Register online here for Spring 4th/5th Soccer or return registration forms to Red Morton Community Center.

Child Nutrition Services: Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.

2022-23 COVID Protocols in Our School
The Redwood City School District (RCSD) is following recommendations from the San Mateo County Office of Education’s (SMCOE) COVID-19 Safe Schools Framework, which was developed for 2022-23 in consultation with San Mateo County Health (SMCH), reflecting guidance for schools and districts including from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
