Getting to know your Board: Trustee Criste Freymond
What made you want to become a school board member and why?
This is a funny story. Kris Wyatt called me and asked me to run for school board. I told her that I was just a parent who loved kids, but ultimately, I told her I would think about it. After talking with a few friends, I agreed to run! I was on my way home from filing paperwork with the county, and rumors were already out that I was running! I figured that I needed to get home ASAP to tell my husband what I just did, because at this point, he did not know (the news came as quite the shock). Though at first puzzled, once I explained my WHY, he has been very supportive. I am grateful and honored for the opportunity to be a part of the Western Placer Unified School Board of Trustees and represent area one. My family has been blessed to attend WPUSD schools, and I want to pay it forward. I am proud to say my family has had 3 generations graduate from LHS and one more generation at Carlin C. Coppin. I owe this district, and our terrific staff, a debt of gratitude. I'm honored that I can pay it back.
Of the newly adopted board objectives, which one resonates most with you/which one are you most passionate about and why?
Student Voice and Active Engagement: I am passionate about students’ safety and well-being. I will prioritize programs that address mental health, bullying, and provide opportunities for extracurricular activities. I believe that a well-rounded education that addresses students’ social and emotional needs is essential for their overall success. I believe that WPUSD is well on our way to becoming a leader in how our students are educated and in preparing them for the next phase of their lives. We have excellent teachers, administrators, and staff, and I am excited about the future of our schools.
What does life outside of being a board member look like for you? How do you spend your free time?
I retired in October after working 33 years in Lending/Finance providing Small Business Loans to businesses throughout the country. With the extra time I now have, I plan on volunteering in our community and our schools. My husband Bill and I have been married for 27 years and have raised our son and daughter in the rural area of Lincoln. I love spending time with my family, and with my daughter getting married, I now have another son! We have several farm animals that take a lot of our time, and there's always a project to be done on the ranch. We love to camp, fish, hunt, and anything outdoors.
Name a personal goal that you would like to see accomplished during your time as a board member.
My life goal has always been to make a positive impact in people’s lives. I want to BE THE ONE to change a child’s life.
2023-2024 School Board Objectives

SECOND STUDENT SENATE MEETING🤝
This week, we held our second Student Senate meeting, and it was nothing short of amazing! 🤩 Students addressed hate speech and what that looks like at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Zebras mingled with Rhinos to help mend some recent tensions and come up with solutions to promote a healthy rivalry. Students were eager to work together to come up with solutions. 🤝 These student leaders are now tasked with taking what they’ve learned today back to their schools and setting the example for their peers.

RECENT CAMPUS PROJECTS🚨
Roof Painting for Arial Building Identification
The contractor has completed the painting of letters and/or numbers on the roofs of buildings at each of our school sites. This was done to improve our emergency response efforts for law enforcement, should they need to use drones or helicopters during an incident. Check out the drone aerial photos at various sites.
GLEN EDWARDS MIDDLE & SHERIDAN ELEMENTARY WIN ENERGY COMPETITION🔋
Glen Edwards Middle School and Sheridan Elementary School are the winners in the District Wide Energy Management Competition!
In total, the District saved 37,587 kwh (kilowatts used per hour) in energy usage. Glen Edwards Middle School came out on top, saving 12,418 kwh in the month of October. All GEMS students were entered into a raffle, and one lucky student was awarded a brand new electric scooter with safety gear. Additionally, two students from Sheridan Elementary School submitted a flyer into the design contest with PG&E, and they won! Both students received a $50 amazon gift card. Thank you PG&E and way to go Sheridan Elementary!
A big congratulations to all schools, and a big thank you to all students and staff that contributed in energy management behaviors that ultimately saved the district from 'phantom loads' (which is the accumulation of energy used when appliances or devices are plugged in but not in use).

🚨Update Your Emergency Contact Information

ANNUAL EMERGENCY CONTACT UPDATE/VERIFICATION🚨
Review/Update Your Emergency Contact Information 2023-2024
At the end of last school year, your child's school sent out notifications to update/verify your emergency contact information using your PowerSchool Parent Portal. As a reminder, this needs to be completed by every returning family. Families who recently registered their child for school (new to WPUSD) do NOT need to complete this process.
For instructions on how to access your PowerSchool Parent Portal account click HERE.
COMPLETE THE HOUSEHOLD INCOME FORM🏠
Please Complete a 2023-24 Household Income Form to Help Your School Maximize Its Funding!
DID YOU KNOW?
A portion of every school's funding is determined by the needs of its students. Extra funding is usually distributed to schools based on submitted free/reduced meal applications but this year the state is providing schools with the option of using the Household Income Form. This form can easily be completed online and will provide your school with extra funding. Please note that for the 2023-2024 school year all students are eligible for FREE meals, so extra funding will be distributed differently and the Household Income Form is the best source to increase your school’s funding.
WHY FILL OUT THE FORM?
- additional support staff for schools, like Instructional Aides, Intervention Support Providers, and after school tutors
- more resources for classrooms and teachers
- additional health and wellness services
- fee waivers for college applications
- fee waivers for college admissions exams (i.e. SAT/ACT/AP)
It’s a quick process and only needs to be completed once for each household. By taking the time to fill out this form, you are taking part in a process that might provide thousands of dollars in funds to the school your student attends. You can also access this form when you are updating your Emergency Contact Information and Waiver Forms in your Parent Portal account.
If you need assistance in completing this form please contact your child's school office or the District Office (916) 645-6350 and we can help!
