Motivating and Retaining Student Learning Gains

by Dr. Shainaz Landge

Dr. Landge, winner of the GS SoTL Award and GS Award for Teaching Excellence (2018), will present on her SoTL research dedicated to investigating student motivation and retention of learning gains. While her SoTL projects were grounded in the teaching of chemistry, she will discuss how the findings of her research are applicable across disciplines. Dr. Landge will also share insights into the SoTL research and publication process.

Open Educational Resources (OER) have been on the discussion table for several years. Perhaps you have thought about incorporating OERs into your own courses? Perhaps you wonder how this is possible, or when/how you would ever find the time to revamp a course? Join the OER Faculty Learning Community and explore your options. Academic Librarians and the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) will provide guidance in types/availability/options of OER materials, as well as guidance in designing a course using OER. Faculty who participate will work towards building a proposal to submit to Affordable Learning Georgia for an upcoming round of Textbook Transformation Grants.

Hosted by the Georgia Southern University Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the SoTL Commons is an international conference on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning with an intimate feel - listen to high quality presentations from nationally and internationally recognized speakers and join in conversations with a community of scholars from around the world.

I serve as the liaison to the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the College of Graduate Studies. In the Center, I coordinate our certificate and badge programs as well as our graduate student programming. Before coming to Southern, I taught writing and literature courses. My teaching experience inspires my current research interests in reading and writing for critical thinking.

As a first-generation college student, I also enjoy researching best practices for easing the transition from high school to college for first-year and first-gen students. If these topics are of interest to you, look for forthcoming workshops!
