Houston AABSE hosted the 35th Annual TARC program on Friday, February 4, 2022. The event was a virtual awards presentation due to Covid 19 protocols for safety. Over Two Hundred Twenty educators represented the numerous school districts throughout the Houston area as campus selected Teachers of the Year. Each campus selection candidate was competing for the titles of HAABSE Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Congratulations to the following educators selected as:

HAABSE Secondary Teacher of the Year- Ms April Red, Dulles Middle School, Fort Bend ISD

HAABSE School Board Member of the Year - Ms Ann Williams, Alief ISD

Each of the three honorees competed for TABSE honors at the 37th Annual State Conference.

Ms Vanita Reed was selected as the recipient of the prestigious Dr. Elaine Bailey Heart of HAABSE Award for her contributions over many years of dedicated service.

Congratulations to all of the educator participants and winners. An outstanding program was coordinated by the TARC committee members in presenting the program.

Mrs. Elma Jean Carr

Elma Jean Carr was born in Houston to the late Rev. Leroy Felder and the late Mrs. Emmie G. Felder. She was educated mostly in Houston; however, she graduated from Prairie View High School. After high school, she attended Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas. She received her bachelor's degree in 1965. Her major was elementary education with a minor in art. During her career, she continued her education with post-graduate studies at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas.

Mrs. Carr enjoyed her life and career in Fort Worth as well as each community in which she lived. She dedicated herself to the growth and development of her faith, family, friends and community. She lived her life with grace, poise, high energy and a "can do" spirit that inspired all of those she met, and she enjoyed all things of beauty.

Mrs. Carr started her career with the Fort Worth ISD as a third-grade teacher in 1965. She found joy in her work and truly believed that third grade was the most important year in a child's life. She would often say third graders "must learn basic reading, math and writing skills to make it in life." She cared for her students as their teacher, mentor and beyond, often providing clothing, school supplies and food to make sure they were ready to learn. Her first assignment was with Morningside Elementary School. She also taught at A.M. Pate, Burton Hill, and Mitchell Boulevard Elementary schools over a 34-year span of service.

She was a charter member and co-founder of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators. She was recognized for outstanding service by the National Alliance of Black School Educators in 2011.

A retired educator with the Fort Worth Independent School District, Mrs Carr passed in July 2016, with her loving family at her side following an illness. She was a lady of distinct class and style and will be remembered for her love of family, church and community.

The 2022, 37th Annual TABSE State Conference, Reimagining Education was convened in Dallas, Texas at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Attendees from TABSE affiliates around the state numbered approximately 650. The total conference planning committees did an outstanding job making certain conference registration, conference schedules, presentations, exhibits, hospitality, logistics, volunteers and other behind the scenes activities were properly and thoroughly executed for registrant enjoyment. Dr. David Harris, TABSE President and Dr. Chris Pichon, TABSE President-Elect are commended for their leadership and coordination of this 37th Annual State Conference.

On Wednesday, February 9th, the Dr. Elaine Bailey Innovator’s STEAM Golf Tournament was conducted. An excellent turnout of nearly seventy golfers took part in the event. A fun day of sun, golf, good food and fellowship was enjoyed by all who participated. Golfers had excellent weather for the event and prizes were won by several “Tiger Woods” possibilities. Ms Bashelia Ward, Chairperson, coordinated the outing.

Conference registration opened on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m., in preparation for opening events on Thursday morning. Kudos go to the TABSE Registration Committee who greeted and registered attendees with professionalism, courtesy and enthusiasm, Ms Kashi Woods and Ms Valerie Huey were Co-Chairs. Name badges, conference bags, purchased tickets and programs were dispatched with organization and promptness.

A TABSE First Timer’s Orientation and Networking meeting was conducted Thursday morning to officially welcome and introduce new conference attendees to TABSE officers, affiliate leaders and provide helpful information regarding their involvement in the conference. Several prizes were raffled off and five winners each received $1,000.00 from the presenters, Dr. Corina Bullock and Dr. Brenda Dearman. Every attendee received a gift on their tables and other financial gifts were presented. Participants in attendance seemed to be in great spirit and mood upon the close of the morning meeting. All new members are encouraged to become active with their local ABSE affiliates and benefit from their association with other educators around the state.

During various General Sessions, presentations by several influential educators were received by the audience, along with introductions of several TABSE Founders, past NABSE and TABSE Presidents and political representatives in attendance. Our Founders and past Presidents are important for the younger membership to see, hear from and meet, so that our TABSE legacy can successfully continue through younger leadership and organizational planning. It is always an honor to have our past leaders join our conference and share their experiences and wisdom.

Conference workshop presentations in excess of sixty were presented covering numerous topics of interest to educators from all levels of schooling. These workshops ran throughout the day Thursday through Saturday, mornings and afternoons, allowing participants to choose topics of interest over several days. Workshop scheduling and locations made it convenient for conference attendees to chose and attend several sessions without excessive walking.

Exhibitors from educational related businesses and corporations were in attendance offering various services and products to our educator audience. Vendors located in the flow of conference traffic made for constant opportunities for exhibitor conversations with TABSE members Thursday through Saturday. Mr. Montrail Davis served as Exhibit Area Chairperson.

Educators had an opportunity to advance in their professions and/or seek new teaching opportunities, during a Job Fair conducted on Thursday, February 10, 2022. Numerous school districts from around the state were in attendance and conference attendees had direct access to district recruiters for employment possibilities. It is hoped that individuals who sought new employment options, made indelible impressions with the school districts they conversed with.

On Saturday morning, the Delegate Assembly breakfast and meeting began at 8:00 a.m. The Delegate Assembly is the TABSE business meeting and is open to all current dues paid TABSE members. Reports were given by the Recording Secretary, Treasurer, along with Executive Board election results. Discussion of recommended Constitutional changes occurred and some items were approved, with some requiring additional discussion in the near future before being voted upon again. It has been indicated that members should use their personal email address for TABSE correspondence, rather than school email address, due to career moves, school district Spam etc. in order to better receive TABSE information forwarded to members electronically. All members are encouraged to provide their personal address to local affiliate officers, who in turn will submit that information to TABSE for the current membership rosters and mailing lists. Officers completing their terms in office were recognized for service along with newly elected officers beginning a two-year term in office.

On Thursday evening, beautiful ladies took part in the “Pearls and Chucks” Dining With Divas dinner meeting. Ladies adorned in pearls and Chuck Taylor sneakers had a festive evening while having information shared by highly respected and talented educators and sharing dinner. The event has become more popular each year and powerhouse ladies freely educate, encourage, and share their expertise as role models for educators from all levels of school employment. Ms. Julia Andrews served as chairperson of Dining with Divas for the conference.

Saturday evening male educators shared dinner with eighth grade young men from Marlin ISD and Houston. Several gentlemen spoke to the middle schoolers to encourage and challenge them to prepare for their futures by being persistent and having dreams of their future success. It was stated by several gentlemen that giving up must never be considered a solution to any problem faced. In preparation for high school and maturity, the young men were provided with neckties and taught how to tie their ties by the adult men sharing dinner with them. Mr. William Ealy is commended for his coordination and planning of this outstanding evening for both students and adults alike.

Royalty Is In Our DNA was the theme of the Friday evening Gala event. Beautiful Queens were in traditional African attire along with Kings displaying cultural ceremonial garb and combined, making a true Motherland impact for the evening events and activities. A very good-looking crowd enjoyed an evening of entertainment and awards. Dr. Darwin Spiller and Ms. Statia Paschel served as King and Queen of the evening program and provided a treat for the audience.

Awards Gala Recognitions of outstanding educators and the changing of the guard of the TABSE Executive Board were the highlight of the evening. TABSE awards were presented to Teacher of the Year, Assistant Principal of the Year, Principal of the Year, School Board Member of the Year, Special Award and Living Legend.

Sunday morning Ecumenical service was held for the numerous members prior to beginning their return to their homes. Worship, praise and music filled the air as an official end to the 37th Annual TABSE State Conference.

Mrs. Rhonda Dean Mason has been named the Sam Houston State University, College of Education Distinguished Educator of the Year. This award recognizes educators who have made a significant contribution to education. Mrs. Mason is an active TABSE and HAABSE member. Congratulations for her achievement and recognition.
