A Message from the Williston Schools Leadership Team
by Lauren Goracy, Director of Special Services
How is Williston Schools implementing Act 173? Part 2
Hello Williston Schools! In the last school bell, I gave you a brief overview of Act 173. The purpose of the act is “to enhance the effectiveness, availability, and equity of services provided to all students who require additional support in Vermont’s schools.” This week, I am going to dive a bit deeper into one of the four levers of this act and explain what our school is currently doing to enhance our practices in order to meet the needs of our students. The four levers include a Coordinated Curriculum, Educational Support Teams as part of our Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports, a Local Comprehensive Assessment System, and Needs-Based Professional Development. I am going to explain a bit ore in detail the Coordinated Curriculum.
1. Coordinated Curriculum
A coordinated curriculum is a road map for teachers, caregivers, and students that is aligned across schools horizontally and across grade levels vertically. It ensures that teachers do not teach the exact same thing multiple times and that important topics are not missed. It also allows the opportunity for all students in all grades to have similar curricular experiences. It is a means to communicate our priorities to parents, students, and our community. It also allows teachers to receive support in areas they might need resources in/or attention and it helps us determine pacing and topic emphasis. It also recognizes the fact that teachers cannot teach everything there is to know, but they can critically determine which subjects are imperative to teach using the Common Core Standards, Learning Targets, and CVSD Graduation Standards as a guide.
All classroom teachers in Williston Schools were engaged in this professional development on Wednesdays during the 2022-2023 school year. They were part of a series of work sessions called JAMS (Job-A-Likes) and met with teachers in their subject area or grade level within their schools and then across schools. Teachers created and are now implementing coordinated curriculums called KUDs (Know, Understand, Do) in each subject area across all grade levels. They have access to these on an internal website and the plan is to create a parent/caregiver website soon so that anyone in the community can have access. This is a process that we are still working on and will continue to update and improve.
Next month, I plan on sharing more information about the Education Support Teams as part of our Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports. Please reach out to me with any questions.
Enjoy your weekend!
Best,
Lauren Goracy

Health Office Updates
VISION AND HEARING SCREENING FOR STUDENTS
Health Offices at WCS and ABS have started to test students' vision and hearing. Vermont schools are required by the state to test students' vision and hearing in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th grades.
This year Chittenden County Lions Club visited our schools on October 17th (WCS) and October 3rd (ABS) to perform vision photoscreening.
Vermont Lions KidSight program uses a photoscreening digital device called a SPOT to objectively check for vision problems. The photoscreener is like a large camera. It takes a picture of your child’s eyes. With that and the measurements obtained from the images, SPOT can detect a number of potential eye conditions.
If we find a problem, we will send you a referral letter. If your child’s SPOT results form states “Complete Eye Exam Recommended” at the top right of the page, it is a referral and we recommend that your child visit an eye care professional.
On the SPOT referral, you will see a section on the right side of the page called “Potential Condition”. This includes
information about the potential eye condition(s) detected by the SPOT device.
If you do not hear from us, your child passed the screenings.
Thank you so much and as always reach out to the nurses with any questions.

Connecting Youth & ParentIn
Connecting Youth Seeks Mentors
CVSD’s Connecting Youth (CY) seeks new community members to join our team of mentors for 5th - 12th grade students. This is a meaningful volunteer opportunity to be engaged with your community and truly make a difference in the life of one great kid!
Mentors and mentee pairs meet weekly for about an hour. *We work with mentors' personal/professional schedules*
School year commitment
Mentor training and continual support provided by CVSD mentor coordinators.
Middle school mentors have access to dedicated spaces for cooking, crafting, playing games and developing a friendship.
High school mentors work alongside students to grow their skills and resilience, guide in goal-setting, and even explore possible career paths through new interests and experiences.
If you consider yourself fun, caring and trustworthy, your consistent presence can enhance a young person’s self-confidence, improve their academic performance, prevent substance use, and help them discover new passions. All while enriching your own life.
