We are in the heart of cold and flu season. It is important that we work together to keep our children healthy. Viruses/Common Colds spread easily among children in schools, and families with school-age children have more infections than others. You can help prevent the spread of viruses and the common cold or help your child get better if he/she does get sick by following a few simple steps.
- Cover his/her nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and dispose of the tissue immediately.
- Cough or sneeze into the bend of their elbow, or to cough down into the front of their own shirt to help keep as many germs as possible off of the hands.
- Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available.
- Optional, wear a mask. DCSD will have masks available if needed.
MARK your calendars! February is Black History Month, and as you know, Henderson Mill Elementary takes great pride in how we acknowledge and celebrate our beautifully diverse population. In addition to the curriculum taught in your child’s class regarding Black History, we are planning a school-wide culminating event and EVERY student is invited to participate. Thank you to all the parents that signed their children up to participate in our annual program. You will receive more information this week. Staff will reach out to you via Class DOJO on next steps regarding rehearsal and more details. We look forward to every coming to our program on February 29th.

Henderson Mill’s Foundation is looking for one or two volunteers to take on the pivotal role of March Mania Coordinator. The Coordinator will work with the HMES Foundation to help strategize the fundraising plan for the month of March (typically including managing prizes for fundraising efforts organizing special fundraising days and a pep rally). By volunteering your time for just over one month, you will ensure the continued success of Henderson Mill for years to come. If you are interested in making a difference in our school and community, please reach out to foundationhmes@gmail.com.

Also, did you know that you can buy gifts with your child's artwork featured? Here are the products available for purchase: https://www.artsonia.com/gifts/products/. When you buy, a portion of the sales comes right back to our school's art program. Thanks!!
From the Clinic: I wanted to remind everyone of our DCSD sick policy which is that students must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications (i.e., Tylenol, Ibuprofen) before they can return to school. If you are not sure if your child is too sick for school, please feel free to contact the school nurse at 678-874-3107 or visit: https://www.choa.org/parent-resources/everyday-illnesses/too-sick-for-school. Additionally, for optimal learning readiness and immunity from cold and flu season, please be sure that your child has had plenty of rest the night before each school day. The CDC recommends 9-12 hours of sleep for elementary aged children. For more information on establishing healthy sleep habits, visit: https://www.strong4life.com/en/parenting/schedules-and-routines/healthy-sleep-habits-for-kids#how-much-sleep-do-kids-need

Partner With Us!!
This year we are preparing for STEAM recertification. and we need your support!
STEAM is an acronym for four different fields of study: science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. The purpose of a STEAM program is to build students’ capacity in each of these areas.
We are in need of community, business, and university partnerships to help support our STEAM Program.
Do you, or someone you know, work in a field that utilizes these fields of study?
Please take a moment to fill out the form if you are interested in partnering with the first STEM/STEAM certified school in the state of Georgia.

If your child is leaving school for early checkout, please send a note that morning or contact your child’s teacher in ClassDojo. This will help your child’s teacher prepare for his/her transition. Early checkout includes dentist or doctor visits, etc.
Using your phone, you must scan the QR code on the front entrance by the school buzzer. No check-outs are allowed after 1:30, for the safety and accountability of all students. Please return your child to school if their appointment is done before the school day is over.
