A note from the Superintendent...
I hope this newsletter finds you safe and warm. It seems that old man Winter finally decided to pay a visit this week, bringing with him our first snow days of the year. Making a decision about school during inclement weather is not easy, as many factors must be taken into account. Ultimately, the safety of our students has to be the top priority.
Thanks to the support of the Missouri Department of Education (DESE), we can continue learning on inclement weather days through Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI). DESE allows us up to 5 AMI days, supplemented by 36 hours of 'built-in' snow days in our academic calendar. Our goal is to avoid extending the school year in May, but there's always a chance that it could become necessary if we exhaust all of our built-in time and the AMI days allowed by DESE.
As we navigate these winter days, let's hope Old Man Winter doesn't linger too long. Your understanding and cooperation are appreciated as we prioritize both education and safety.

DESE - Every Student Succeeds Act
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is designed to ensure that all students have a significant opportunity to have a fair and equitable high-quality education and to close educational achievement gaps. These programs provide assistance to rural- and low-income schools and services to students who are migrants, at-risk (including neglected and delinquent), homeless and English learners. In addition, the programs provide assistance to 21st Century Learning Centers and professional development for teachers and leaders.
By design, Missouri's ESSA plan outlines only a portion of the state's system for school improvement. The Missouri School Improvement Plan (MSIP) is the accountability measure of school improvement in the state, and ESSA is a component of that effort. Missouri is well-positioned to lead the nation on student success through our own homegrown systems. By taking additional time to gather feedback and establish our vision for education in Missouri, we hope to create a high-quality plan that meets the needs of all children.
