Help our recently graduated MCHers celebrate a major milestone! COVID-19 might be postponing in-person celebrations, but you can share a message, words of wisdom, or just a quote with the class of 2020 and send them off feeling supported and encouraged. Submit a short written or video message by Friday, May 15, or visit our webpage for more info.

As the pandemic moves across the US, it’s bringing into focus that certain populations are suffering far more than others. In this 20-minute episode, learn what particular challenges face the homeless, the incarcerated, people of color, and new immigrants as they try to stay safe. Featuring Center faculty Drs. Rachel Hardeman, Jaime Slaughter-Acey and Rebecca Shlafer.

A recent blog postt features UNC Chapel Hill doctoral student, Alexandria Lesak. Alexandria writes how context can impact initiatives and priorities within MCH work. She also shares her extensive professional experience and how collaboration is key in partnerships.

MCH faculty spotlights are short interviews with faculty who teach, support, and advise MCH students. Our first spotlight features Dr. Susan Mason, PhD, MPH, a social epidemiologist whose research focuses on adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and trauma.

First year MCH student, Lai Jing Su, completed a deployment with Find Your Power (FYP), a startup nonprofit with a mission to empower underrepresented women by expanding their access to vital resources and the internet. During this time of crisis, domestic violence programs and mental health and substance use treatment providers are facing new challenges daily. The National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma and Mental Health wants to provide timely, useful resources on responding to the COVID-19 epidemic. University researchers around the world are reaching out to pregnant and postpartum women over 18 that may have interest in sharing their experiences related to COVID-19 (also called SARS-CoV-2). Participate here.

This JAMA Pediatrics Viewpoint by Dr. Ezra Golberstein, UMN School of Public Health, shares how mental health resources for children and adolescents may be affected due to school closures, as well as how their mental health may be negatively impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. This new COVID-19 Information Repository from our sister Center of Excellence in MCH at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health's Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Program contains COVID-related information about adolescent health; gender and global health, environmental health, technology and innovation,; mental and emotional health, pregnancy and delivery, school closures, and domestic and sexual violence.

Black women die from pregnancy complications two to three times more than their White and Hispanic counterparts, according to a January 30, 2020, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report containing the first national data on maternal deaths in the US since 2007. Clayton, Director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH), on how Black Maternal Health Week helps keep this heartbreaking health disparity front and center, where it belongs.

Understanding African American grief requires taking a long look at the historical and contemporary experiences around the issues of death. However there is very little research conducted on Black grief and its connection to racism and the social injustices connected to it. This archived webinar was hosted by the National Institute for Children's Health Quality (NICHQ) on behalf of Baby 1st Network.

The purpose of this CDC funding opportunity is to provide emergency funding for federally recognized tribes, tribal organizations, consortia of federally recognized tribes, or their bona fide agents that represent tribal components of the public health system to carry out COVID-19 preparedness and response activities. The Office of Epidemiology and Research (OER) in HRSA's MCH Bureau (MCHB) is seeking applicants interested in gaining first-hand exposure to and training in support of research, analyses and synthesis of performance measurement and/or evaluation data for major MCH investments supported by the Federal MCHB, e.g., Healthy Start; training in support of research and analyses of data from the National Survey of Children's Health; and more.
