Mission Statement & Vision Statement
To enhance whole student wellness in support of health and learning by advancing school nursing practice.
Student access to health and learning. All day. Every day.
This newsletter takes NASN’s Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice approach.
President's Message
Like many of you at the beginning of a new year, I have reset my focus on what I can do in my life that will bring about positive changes. Most of us are drawn into nursing because we are very nurturing and compassionate people who pour all we have into caring for others, at work and at home. We are not always very successful at taking care of ourselves.
Provision 5 of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses states, "The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to promote health and safety, preserve wholeness of character and integrity, maintain competence, and continue personal and professional growth" Mar 14, 2015
Did you know that? Our responsibility! We should take care of ourselves with the same respect that we give those in our care. This means eating healthy, getting enough sleep, exercising, and meeting our emotional needs.
In 2018, I am re-focusing on self-care.
Self-care is a lifelong journey of baby steps. It will mean many different things to all of you. The basic premise is that self-care is a way to strengthen yourself, find your inner heart so that you're ready for anything life brings.
First of all, figure out your "WHY". Maybe you want to set a good example for your kids or you want to fit into your favorite jeans. For me, I want to become healthier so that I can enjoy adventures and life with my family for years to come.
Set manageable goals one week at a time. If you don't meet your goal, don't give up. Remember your "why".
Try becoming mindful of what you're doing, why you're doing it and how are you feeling. If it's toxic, let it go. It is easy to take a few moments to bring mindfulness into your day. See the suggested apps below.
Make quality sleep a priority. A good night's sleep is incredibly important for health. In fact, it is just as important as eating healthy and exercising.
And lastly, share your journey. Find that support to help keep you accountable.
It is my hope for all of you in 2018 and beyond that we, as nurses, take care of ourselves just as much as we promote health, safety, wholeness of character and integrity in those we serve.
Sláinte (health) to you,
Lisa Sicilio, MEd, BSN, RN, NCSN
STANDARDS OF PRACTICE
National Association of School Nurses CODE OF ETHICS
A new year is a great time to review our Foundational documents for School Nursing Practice. The Code of Ethics guides us as we practice in an educational setting.
"As such, school nurses must have not only the skills to communicate within both the healthcare and education arenas, but also the requisite knowledge and skills to interpret applicable laws, regulations and professional standards, as well as apply ethical theories and principles" (ANA & NASN, 2011).
How Can we Endure through the Lows that Come with Our Profession?

Smartphone addiction could be changing your brain
Being addicted to your smartphone can affect your safety and your health. See the article on CNN for more.
Cell phone addiction is increasing, surveys show, and a new study released recently adds to a growing body of evidence that smartphone and internet addiction is harming our minds -- literally.
"Addicted teenagers in the study also had significantly higher scores in anxiety, depression and levels of insomnia and impulsivity, said Dr. Hyung Suk Seo, professor of neuroradiology at Korea University, who led the study."
""To me, the most interesting aspect of the study is that they were able to see a correction of the imbalance after cognitive behavior therapy intervention," Wintermark said."
