MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
We're so glad to have everyone back in the building after the snow/ice last week! We hope you all survived and were able to enjoy the week at home.
Please note that I am cancelling the Principal's Coffees for next week, so the next ones will be on March 7th and 8th. Regretfully the missed week has left me behind on some critical deadlines.
We had a Team Response Drill this week on Thursday. Team Response is activated when there is a medical emergency or incident that requires staff to control movement inside the school. Any adults that are not supervising students report to the office, and all students move into their classrooms in order to clear the hallways. The drill went very well, thank you for everyone's participation!
Our spring STOPPS drill will occur on Thursday, February 8, 2024. During this drill, the students that ride the bus to school the day of the safety drill are the only students that need to participate. The drivers of each bus will spend time running the students that rode the bus through the evacuation drill AS THEY ARRIVE AT SCHOOL. Students who have found other means to arrive at school are not required to participate. This applies to all of the Atkinson bus routes, including SPED.
Have a wonderful long weekend, and we'll see you on Tuesday!
Debbie Armendariz
Principal
Atkinson Elementary School
NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS MONDAY, JAN 29
With the updated district calendar, Monday, January 29th is now a teacher work day so students DO NOT HAVE SCHOOL. Have a lovely long weekend!
COUNSELOR AND SOCIAL WORKER CORNER
Critical health resources available to students and families
As of July 1, 2023, people of all ages who meet income and other criteria qualify for full OHP benefits and other services and supports, no matter their immigration status. This is possible thanks to a law called Healthier Oregon.
January/February Monthly Value: Empathy
Our monthly value of Empathy is being extended into February. Several January classroom lessons needed to be rescheduled, so we are postponing January lessons to February. February classroom lessons will be on the topic of emotions.
LUNCHTIME VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR THURSDAYS!
We are still in need of some new parent volunteers to help serve during both lunches on Thursdays (11:35 a.m.–12 p.m. and 12:05–12:30 p.m.). Please let Katie (kcarriker@pps.net) or Debbie (darmenda@pps.net) know if you're able to help!
OFFICE SNACKS
We would like to ask for your help on the snack front!
We try to keep snacks on hand in the office for students who are not able to bring snacks from home, or who forget a snack from home and are really hungry. We've noticed an uptick in students coming to the office for snacks lately, so we have started a "snack pass" system where students have to ask their homeroom teachers for a pass in order to come to the office for a snack.
If your family is able, please pack snacks for your children each day. Most classes take snack breaks a couple of times each day. If your family is not able to provide snacks each day, please know that we have them here and we will always feed hungry children!
If your family is also able donate snacks to the office snack supply, we would appreciate it so much. We go through a lot of snacks! Thank you!
DISTRICT VISUAL ARTS CLUSTER SHOWCASE
We are so excited to announce that four of our students will have their art displayed in the upcoming District Art Showcase! We hope to see you at the Showcase on February 1st from 4-6pm.
