BLHS staff save student’s life during PE class
On May 1 the unthinkable happened. Bonney Lake High School freshman Logan Burton collapsed during fitness class while at school. His heart stopped beating. Thanks to the quick actions of BLHS staff, who used CPR and an AED, Logan is alive today.
At the May 17 school board meeting, East Pierce Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Jeff Moore and Logan’s mom, Alicia Burton, honored BLHS staff who were instrumental in saving Logan’s life.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the packed boardroom when Alicia recounted the moment she learned of her son’s cardiac arrest. “We never in a million years thought we would hear the words ‘cardiac arrest’ again.” Logan’s first cardiac arrest was after open heart surgery seven years earlier.
After PE teacher Javid Shoemaker applied chest compressions for about eight minutes, PE teacher Eryn Ruud used the automated external defibrillator (AED). It was this combination that saved Logan.
From EMTs to emergency room staff and cardiologists, they all told Alicia that “Bonney Lake High School staff are heroes. They did textbook CPR and AED.”
Alicia went on to express gratitude that BLHS and all of our district facilities have AEDs. She noted that if it had happened anywhere else — at home, in a restaurant or in the car — Logan would not be with us today. It was the right time, right place and right people.
Alicia and her family are eternally grateful for the superheroes who saved their son’s life. The District also recognized their life-saving, heroic actions.

A team of staff and students cut the purple ribbon, ushering in the crowd who enjoyed a self-guided tour of the three-story building that highlighted classrooms, science labs, the library and student store.

State patrol inspection finds District’s fleet 100 percent safe
Congrats to our Transportation Department for earning 100 percent for vehicle safety! The perfect score came this week after the Washington State Patrol’s annual inspection of the District’s full operating fleet. The WSP safety team inspects district buses twice a year – the full operating fleet in summer during a planned inspection, and about 25 perfect of randomly-selected buses unannounced inspection in the winter. We appreciate our mechanics, drivers and staff for their continued commitment to safety!

SMS students create tooth pillows for ELC kinders
When kindergarteners lose a tooth at school, where does it go?
Kinders at the Sumner Early Learning Center can pick out a tooth pillow made by students at Sumner Middle School to keep their tooth safe until they get home.
Students in Hailey Thrush’s Family and Consumer Science Personal Choices class learn personal finance, careers/job interviews, kitchen safety/cooking and sewing. They created the pillows during the hand sewing unit before they began using the sewing machine. Hailey’s classes usually make and donate about 25 pillows per semester after starting the project last school year.
Thank you, students! The kinders love their pillows!

Josh Agpalza: Being open to mental health wellness
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, SBLSD Equity Director Josh Agpalza shared his own story about when he had to put his mental health first.
It started back in January 2021, after he returned to work from being sick. An assistant principal at Sumner High School at the time, he started having negative thoughts that wouldn’t go away. Every day felt like a struggle. When his heart began to race one day while at work, he didn’t realize at the time that it was a panic attack.
With support from both his family and his work colleagues, Josh was able to find help that he still uses to this day.
If you’re a student, Josh said, don’t hesitate to seek help from your school counselors, who are there to support you. If you’re a staff member, it’s okay to seek help from your colleagues.
“I want people to know that mental health is not a stigma — it’s nothing to be ashamed of. We have to recognize it, be open about it and be okay with getting the help we need,” Josh said.
Read the full story here or watch the video below. Thank you, Josh, for sharing your story and finding the strength to seek help. We are proud to have you as part of our SBLSD family!
