Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
A New Support is Available for all Student Classes!
What is Social Emotional Learning?
Social-emotional learning (SEL) helps students develop self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills. Strong social-emotional abilities assist students with their academic work and their social skills.
Based on the Casel Framework (2022) the 5 SEL Competencies or Areas that we will look at are:
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-Making.
Why Is our School Offering This?
Our schools are committed to supporting the whole child. We know that students have been impacted by the isolation brought on by COVID quarantines, and those important social soft skills may have been lost.
This offering of SEL for the Enrichment Academies and Virtual Academics is a step toward supporting the school's ecosystem.
We have been offering SEL for High School credit classes for three years. These have been hugely popular with students and families. To support parents and families, we offered SEL Tier 3 (counseling) supports starting November 2021. We are humbled to say that through the SEL Tier 3, we have been able to support over 180 individuals in our charter's ecosystem (students, staff, parents, and families).
These SEL EA/VA classes are one more added support for our school and community ecosystem.
Different Programs Will have Unique Opportunities for Learning.
The Enrichment Academy Online: In this drop-in program, Monday lessons will focus on SEL skills and how students can apply SEL concepts to different situations. Because there may be a different group of students each week, lessons will be focused on a different social skill each Monday.
The Virtual Classes of ESVA/MSVA: As part of the VA curriculum and schedule, SEL classes for the 3rd-8th grade are offered as an elective class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These are regular classes students commit to taking for the semester and are more involved than the drop-in program. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to learn together and form strong bonds as they will see the same group of students in a regular class twice a week. The focus will be on developing healthy and appropriate relationships with peers (making friends).
