CDW Weekly Wrap-Up

As I observed our Grade 8 students experience Sharpe over the last few days and then safely return to CDW, I thought it was a good time to appreciate the importance of field trips, now more than ever!

A field trip is one of the best tools that educators can use to provide students with real-world experiences. Skills learned on field trips are often not available at school, and each experience supports academic, social, and emotional growth.

At the bottom of each CDW Weekly Wrap-Up are upcoming, important dates!

The Grade 5 students in Ms. Fischer's and Mrs. Park's classes vote on the book of their choice in the Literary March Madness bracket, which includes different genres of books. Each Friday, you can find the winners through the Weekly Wrap-Up!

After the voting this week, Harry Potter, The Last Kids on Earth, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and The Lemonade War are the Final Four!

Each spring, the state of New Jersey administers the NJSLA to all students in grades 3-8. The CDW students will participate as follows:

Grades 5 and 8

• Students in grades 5 and 8 will participate in the NJSLA for Language Arts, Math, and Science between May 9th and May 20th.

Grades 6 and 7

• Students in grades 6 and 7 will participate in the NJSLA for Language Arts and Math between May 9th and May 16th.

All students in grades 5-8 will need headphones or earbuds, which cannot be wireless, for these assessments. If your child does not have a pair of headphones or earbuds at school, please send in a pair from home.

The only electronic device students are permitted to use during NJSLA is a Chromebook provided by the school. If your child has a cell phone, smartwatch, or any other electronic device, it will need to be turned off and in their locker during the testing sessions.

Over the last three days, the Grade 8 students visited Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill, NY to experience the CDW educational program. Mr. Westervelt and the rest of the CDW staff who attended and chaperoned planned a variety of outdoor educational activities throughout the trip. Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to chaperone overnight. It was nice to be able to give this opportunity to the Grade 8 students since they missed the CDW tradition last year. The Northern Valley Color Guard will be starting a club guard for students in 7th and 8th grade. Students will learn basic flag, dance, rifle, and saber spinning in a fun setting. Students will have the opportunity to interact with members and staff of the award winning Northern Valley Color Guard & Winter Guard. The students will learn to perform skills similar to those that you would see in a parade or football halftime show, but inside and with popular music!

The Northern Valley Club Guard will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 5:00 pm to 6:15 pm at Northern Valley Old Tappan High School. It will begin on Tuesday, April 5th, but you can join at any time. For more information, please contact NVOT band director, Amy Wilcox, at wilcox@nvnet.org.

Reminders and Updates from CDW's Student Manager

On Monday, March 28th, there was a virtual CAP Program for parents, and on Tuesday, March 29th, the Grade 7 students experienced the program virtually in their classes. The CDW Musical, Fiddler on the Roof Jr., will have performances on Friday, April 8th at 7:00 PM and on Saturday, April 9th at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Tickets, advertisements, and boosters are now on sale! Tickets can be purchased online at https://cdms.booktix.com, or see the fliers below for more information.

CDW’s production of Fiddler on the Roof Jr. is looking for donations to create props, scenery, and costumes. Donations can be dropped off at the main office. Please make sure to indicate that the items are for the musical so that the office knows where to send them. We thank you in advance for your support!

Charles DeWolf Middle School’s Student Government is hosting a Sock Drive!!!

Where: CDW lobby (there are labeled boxes)

When: Wednesday, March 23rd- Wednesday, April 6th

How to participate:

1. Bring unused, tagged/in-bag socks.

2. Put the socks in a Ziploc bag with:

1. First and last name

2. Grade

3. Homeroom number & teacher

4. Number of pairs of socks in the bag
   

If you donate 5 or more pairs of socks following all the steps above, you will be awarded a HOMEWORK PASS!

Our school-issued Chromebook device damage rates are on the rise and very high. Please remind your chid to keep his/her Chromebook in his/her school-issued case. It is highly recommended that you purchase insurance for your child(ren)'s school-issued Chromebook. Please refer to the information below if you have not purchased the insurance yet.

We are collecting plastic film in the containers outside of CDW. Once a month through April 5th, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. Soon enough, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Please see the flyer below for more information!

As of March 14th, we have 1,480 lbs. of plastic!!!

If your child is applying for admission to another school at any time (Private or Catholic) please contact Mrs. Richardson to let her know prior to requesting forms from the school.

Volunteers play a huge part in the PTO, and what they are able to offer our students and teachers. Without volunteers, many of the programs that students, teachers, and families enjoy will not be able to happen. Volunteer descriptions can be found at: OTPTO.org under "More Info" and then "Flyers."

If you have interest in joining the PTO Board, joining or running a committee, or just want to learn more- please reach out to the PTO by visiting OTPTO.org and selecting "Contact Old Tappan PTO" under the Help tab.

If a member of your household has tested positive (or is waiting on Covid-19 test results), please do not send your child(ren) to school and contact Mrs. McCarthy, our school nurse, to inform her. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Santa or Mrs. McCarthy.

In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness (Covid or non-Covid) at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school.
• is nauseous or is vomiting.
• has diarrhea

Due to Covid-19, if your child comes to school with the following symptoms, Mrs. McCarthy, our school nurse, will call you to pick up your child from school:

• At least two of the following symptoms: fever, chills, rigors, myalgia, headache, sore throat, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, congestion or runny nose; OR
• At least one of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, new olfactory disorder, new taste disorder.

Any student who falls into one of the categories above will be required to have a negative Covid-19 test to return to school. If your child has a chronic illness with one or more of the above symptoms, please contact Mrs. McCarthy so she is aware.

Anytime your child is not feeling well, and will not attend school, please contact Mrs. McCarthy at 201-664-1475 ext. 2103.

The CDC has updated its guidelines regarding international travel. Starting November 8, students who travel internationally will not be required to quarantine following their return to the United States. The United States is requiring a negative Covid-19 test to re-enter the US (from any international destination), so quarantine will not be required. We still ask for families to monitor their child(ren) for symptoms upon their return and quarantine if symptoms surface.
