North Syracuse Central School District's weekly e-news
Issue #73 | September 30, 2022
Hello North Syracuse Central School District Parents, Guardians, Teachers and Staff,
This week started on a particularly high note as I visited Karl W. Saile Bear Road Elementary School with Don Keegan, our Associate Superintendent for Business Services and New York State Assemblyman Al Stirpe. We scheduled the visit because we wanted Mr. Stirpe to see the newly renovated school in person since his support helped us get certain grants directly benefitting the school.
Together we toured the school, talked to staff and took part in one of John DeHay’s Physical Education classes. We visited Bonnie McSpadden’s first-grade class and had our picture taken. People stopped us in the halls and everyone was so thankful for Mr. Stirpe’s visit and constant support over the years.
I left the school that day feeling an amazing sense of community. We live, work and learn together and we know our neighbors. North Syracuse is a great place. We are also Bridgeport, Cicero, Mattydale, Clay and Salina but we are the North Syracuse Central School District and we are one community.
I am proud to call this wonderful place my home and I hope you are too. We are working every day to make the North Syracuse Central School District the best it can be. This past Monday at our Board of Education meeting, two or our schools’ Building Planning Teams (BPTs), Cicero Elementary and Smith Road Elementary presented their goals for the school year.
The work our BPTs are doing is directly aligned with our 5-year strategic plan: Brighter Together. I am excited to see where their work will take us as we move through the school year. Be sure to refer back to our website as we will be using it and your students’ photos to illustrate our schools’ individual goals.
As always thank you for your continued support and commitment to our students.
#NSBrighterTogether
Sincerely,
Daniel D. Bowles, Superintendent of Schools
October 3-7 is Food Service Appreciation Week
Each year, the North Syracuse Central School District designates a week in October as Food Service Appreciation Week. Our food service staff have contributed to the health and educational development of our students by making nutritious breakfasts and lunches that keep them going through the school day. Data shows that school meals help students improve grades, increase attention, reduce absence and tardy rates, and improve behavior.
The Food Service Staff continues to make positive changes in order to provide nutritional meals that meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and are a dedicated group of professionals. Thank you to this dedicated group of professionals for their part in improving our students' educational experiences.

KWS Bear Road Elementary Staff are Golden
Our Karl W. Saile Bear Road Elementary staff are GOLDEN! Here they are in the school's gorgeous new library sporting their gold to support their school family. Principal Cambs shared these photos saying, "In September We Wear Gold for Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month to Honor Luna Gasowski - the daughter of our wonderful kindergarten teacher, Laura Gasowski."
It seems like their hearts are golden too. Great job KWS Bear Road Elementary!
C-NS Principal's Cabinet Members Learn From Pediatric Cancer Nurse
This past Monday, members of the Cicero-North Syracuse High School Principal's Cabinet had the opportunity to learn from Lauren Wilber, a nurse in the Pediatric Oncology department at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Lauren talked to the students about some of the many struggles faced by cancer patients and their families at Golisano. She also told students how the money raised through events like Pajamarama (which is coming up next Friday, Oct. 7) directly supports the patients and families during their darkest times. For our students, listening to her allowed them to realize what a large impact their fundraising efforts over the years have made for families.

On Monday, September 26, New York State Assemblyman Al Stirpe was invited to a special tour of the Karl W. Saile Bear Road Elementary School to get a firsthand look at the newly renovated building and grounds. North Syracuse Central School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dan Bowles and Associate Superintendent for Business Services Don Keegan asked the lawmaker to visit the school to see the enhancements made possible as a direct result of the lawmaker’s support.
Assemblyman Stirpe, a long-time educational advocate, was instrumental in the District’s procurement of a State and Municipal (SAM) grant used to purchase new furniture and install the school’s playground.
