Rāmere Friday 8th April Paenga-whawha 2022 (T1: Wk10/11)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
Term Two DRIVE Inquiry Focus: Next term we are going to be looking at two areas in our DRIVE inquiry process.
- BRRRRRRRM: Why do we have machines and how do they help us? The work done with this will be presented on an information poster. This is a science and technology focus on how machines help us.
- Actively Involved: When I grow up I want to be...because…? The work done with this will be presented as a speech. This is a Social Sciences focus on jobs in our community.
We will also have another trip up to Kamahi Reserve, our Bush School, to learn more and more about our native fauna and flora.
COVID Rules Changes: From last Tuesday 5th April any requirements for showing a vaccine pass to be part of school events as a parent help volunteer has been removed. There is still the requirement to be police vetted.
From Tuesday 5th all track and trace requirements around scanning in were dropped. However, all visitors to school still need to sign in at the office, so that we know who is on-site in the event of an emergency.
Whilst we are still in the COVID Protection Framework red setting, outdoor gathering limits are no longer in place and indoor limits have been lifted to 200.
With COVID prevalent in our school we are still advised to keep limitations upon people coming in.
Children and COVID: With 50 /126 who had or are currently with COVID we are still not at our peak. This equates to only 40% of our roll. It looks like we will be managing the impacts of COVID into the early portion of Term Two.
Thank You - Team Edendale
- Staff: I would like to commend all our staff over this time. It has been a stretching time as we take one day at a time. I appreciate the flexibility and adaptability in times when we don't know what tomorrow will bring. We only have four school days next week left for Term One and it is amazing to think we have got there given that COVID is rolling through our school.

Enrolment at Edendale Primary School is governed by an enrolment scheme.
The School Board has 20 places available for out of zone students for the 2022 school year. The exact number of places is subject to the number of eligible in-zone enrolments received.
We have enrolment places for the first part of Term Two 2022 from Monday 2nd May to Friday 3rd June.
Applications for this period are due on Monday 2nd May.
Information and application forms can be picked up at the school office. Applications can be made electronically through our website (www.edendaleps.school.nz) under Our School - Enrolments and Attendance. On the digital form, by ticking ‘Out of Zone’, you are deemed to be making an application.
If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it will be held on Tuesday 3rd May.
Parents will be informed of the outcome of the application and/or ballot as early as possible.

Principal's Values Award
This week the Principal/Tumuaki would like to acknowledge Liam McCullen for being a strong contributor, living out our school values every day.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Pukeko
It was an easy choice to award Team Pukeko’s MVP this week for Manaakitanga - Respect to Ajay.
This young man shows me every day that he is a polite and cooperative student - he greets me with a warm welcome when he enters the classroom, and he always says ‘Excuse me’ and waits politely if I am busy when he wants to talk to me.
During our interactions, Ajay always says ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’ while we talk, and he is quick to follow my instructions or help with jobs that I ask him to do. I enjoy the stories and information that he shares with us during class discussions.
We are all grateful to have a friendly and kind team-mate like Ajay in our classroom - he enjoys spending time with his friends, is always playing nicely, and he works well when doing small group activities too.
Thank you, Ajay, for being an actively-involved learner who helps make our school a wonderful place to be - we all need people like you in our day!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kahu
Team Kahu’s MVP this week for displaying Manaakitanga - Respect is Lana Reid.
It is important to show respect in all activities and interactions, at school, home and out in the community. Lana shows respect to others and ensures she interacts positively with her teachers and peers. Lana is always polite, using her manners in all situations.
Lana shows respect for herself by always being ready for her learning tasks and following instructions to complete her learning task appropriately.
She is always offering to help with senior jobs and makes sure these are carried out diligently.
Lana has learnt to put in her best effort by having a ‘can do’ attitude and presenting work to a high standard. Lana is a very friendly student who shows respect to everyone.
Thank you, Lana, for being such an awesome member of Team Kahu - you are helping to make Edendale School a great place to be.
Team Kahu Writing - Kamahi Reserve Setting Descriptions
As I sit quietly in the middle of the bush walk in Kamahi Reserve, I felt calm while listening to birds chirping, singing and whistling. I could almost fall asleep if it wasn’t for the annoying cicadas talking to one another. Suddenly, something made me calm again. It was the wind making the leaves on the trees rustle.
I see something amazing. The sunshine pushes through the trees, making the leaves glow. Leaves on the trees sway from left to right. Kids are talking in the distance but I don't mind. It just sounds like whispers.
When I stand, dirt and rocks are all over me. I shake them off as I start to walk back to the way out. Rocks under my feet hurt but I finally see light.

As I step into Kamahi Reserve , my body instantly feels relaxed. Leaves are dancing as the wind blows. I sit down quietly on the rocky path. As my head rolls on up, I spot the sun trying to peek through the tall trees. My body tells me I am happy because I can hear the birds singing and talking to their whanau. I take big breaths through my nose. Freshness hits me.
I stare at a branch with a bird’s nest. The birds have been working hard. A breeze flows right through my body and I instantly start to shiver.
I am nearly dozing off when cicadas wake me. Why can't they talk quietly like we have to at school? I walk slowly out of the bush, my body feels so relaxed.

As I sit down calmly near the mossy green trees, the chilly breeze cools my skin. My ears chuckle as the birds sing their songs and while the wind rustles against the trees. The leaves tumble down hitting the ground softly. As the sun peeks through the trees, cold and pointy rocks sting my legs.
The green leaves shine beyond the sunlight as the cicadas sing their songs. My eyes noticed that the sky was also peeking through the trees. I heard birds going left, right, left and right. I carefully opened my eyes and I immediately spotted a bird nest, high up in the long massive trees.
I closed my eyes gently and listened very carefully. Fantails chirping quickly rush through my sensitive ears as I smile happily. Finally it was time to go. I stood up and as I was walking, I turned around one last time and heard birds singing goodbye. “Bye too” I chuckled, then I left Kamahi reserve.

As I walked peacefully through Kamahi Reserve, I felt relaxed when sitting calmly on the bumpy walking track. As I took deep breaths in through my nose, nature's fresh scent reached my nostrils. Green plants swished about on the forest floor, leaves pranced in the whooshing wind. Prickly trees marched proudly with the breeze, loose leaves lay on the muddy side of the track. Fantails glide past me. Cicadas squeal all along the bush edge. Birds chirp and fantails sing a little tweeting song. Trees and lower bushes rustle in a cold gust of wind.
