PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Good Evening Darby Families,
It was a sad week here at Darby Middle School as we mourned the loss of one of our school family members, David Mercado (8th grade). Throughout the week students and staff found different ways to grieve. Students have made posters, decorated small rocks, written letters, and shared stories of their sweet friend. I am very proud of how our school family has come together and supported each other during this difficult time. I would like to thank the district counseling team and community partners for all the love and support offered to our students this past week.
Today, we had the opportunity to show off our new construction that was completed through the Vision 2023 capital improvement project. We had multiple community members who came to tour and see our beautiful building. Our student groups are awesome and gave tours to school board members, district leaders, and even the Fort Smith Mayor!
Our media center is having their official grand opening this week! Make sure your student checks out the activities we have going on in there during lunches. There will be drawings for prizes and fun all week long!
Progress reports will be sent home on Monday, November 15th. They will be distributed by your student's third period advisory teacher. Just a reminder that you can contact teachers directly through email if you have any questions about grades.
Tomorrow is the last day of our Thanksgiving canned food drive. Please send items with your student tomorrow if you are wanting to donate.
There will be no school November 22nd - November 26th. Enjoy your Thanksgiving break!

Expand your teen's experience by reading aloud
When children hit adolescence, many parents stop reading to them. But reading aloud offers benefits to teens. Choose books or articles that let your teen experience someone else's mistakes or discoveries. Read things that help her realize she is not the first person to deal with a difficult situation. Ask a librarian for help choosing titles. Another bonus: If your teen likes what she hears, she may read more herself!
