A Note From Principal May
Dear Station Families,
Teaching responsibility is a fundamental aspect of our educational mission at Station Campus. As your children navigate these crucial years of development, we believe in equipping them with the skills and values necessary to become responsible, independent, and accountable individuals. Our dedicated team of educators is committed to fostering a learning environment that encourages responsibility through structured routines, goal-setting, and guidance. We encourage you to join us in this journey, as your support and reinforcement of these principles at home will greatly contribute to their growth and success. In that spirit, consider letting your middle schooler find their own solutions to some of the common problems they encounter; such as forgotten lunches and homework. They’ll learn so much more about how to navigate life’s quandaries, if we let them discover their own solutions. Together, we can empower our students to make thoughtful choices, take ownership of their actions, and lay a strong foundation for a bright future. Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of shaping your child's educational experience.
Sincerely,
Chad May
Principal Station Middle School
Testing Update
As the Fall MAP test scores have been recently sent home, I wanted to provide some guidance on how to approach this conversation with your child. It's essential to emphasize that test scores are not just numbers; they are tools for growth and self-assessment. Encourage an open and supportive dialogue with your child, focusing on their effort and progress rather than just the final results. Help them understand that these scores are indicators of areas where they may excel and areas that offer room for improvement, and that both aspects are part of the learning process. Be empathetic and ensure that your child knows that their worth is not defined solely by their performance on a test. This conversation is an opportunity to motivate them, set realistic goals, and reinforce that learning is a journey where setbacks are part of the process. Together, we can help our students develop resilience and a positive attitude towards learning.
Sincerely,
Jessica Buchanan
Assistant Principal for Student Services
Counselor Connection
This month Station recognizes two national awareness campaigns: Blue Shirt Day (bullying prevention) and Red Ribbon Week (substance use prevention). It is fitting then, that October’s monthly SEL lesson will focus on making healthy choices. In addition to our SEL lesson, students will participate in Colt Time activities to bring awareness to both bullying and substance use prevention.
DID YOU KNOW? Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t; yet, only a quarter of teens report having these conversations. Red Ribbon Week® (October 23-27), the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation, is your opportunity to get the ongoing conversation started. Visit www.redribbon.org to learn more about Red Ribbon Week® and get tips for talking to your kids about making healthy choices.
News You Can Use
October is National Bullying Awareness Month, and this is an opportunity to encourage the nation to take action at the local level to create safe and supportive organizations. Bullying is unacceptable and comments or conduct that disparages or demonstrates hostility or aversion should not be tolerated. By being accepting, kind and inclusive, you can help make the world a better place. Together we can create a world without bullying! Sign Out Procedures
If you plan to pick up your child up early from school, we ask that you please put in an Absence Request in the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus. When you arrive to pick up your child, please come to the front door with your cell phone. Ms. Jarva or Ms. Alters will buzz you in and you will scan a QR code (located on table near front door) that is linked to a sign-out form that you complete while you wait for your child to come down from class. Please note, only individuals listed on Infinite Campus (IC) will be allowed to pick up your child. If you need assistance with the parent portal, please contact the Infinite Campus Hotline at (847)-842 3580.
Thank you!
