Principal's Message
Greetings Springwater Students and Families,
Progress grades for the 1st 6-weeks posted to Synergy on Monday. Please take some time to sit down (student and guardian) to review grades. Please also reach out to your student's teacher if you have questions or concerns. We have also been calling families of students who are currently not receiving credit (designated as an "NG" on the progress report) for one or more of their classes.
COVID Update: Families have been doing a phenomenal job ensuring their students stay home when they are sick. Thank you!!! I know keeping students home for longer periods of time is not easy -- for the student or the parent. But being extra cautious helps minimize the number of students who might be impacted (and quarantined) if there was a positive COVID case at school. The work you all are doing is paying off: we have been able to keep all classes open and have so far avoided any school-related quarantine situations.
Cell Phones/Calls & Texts During the School Day: All in all, students are doing a really good job transitioning back to school this year. Cell phones continue to be a challenge. Please remember cell phones should be off (or set to vibrate) when class is in session. Please support your student by reminding them of this expectation. We are requesting students return texts and phone calls to parents during passing time or lunch to minimize distractions. Of course, if there is an emergency please reach out to the office and we can connect you with your student.
Masks: Students are doing a great job wearing masks throughout the school day (not always an easy thing to do -- especially when they are outside playing basketball at lunch). Students must keep their masks over their nose and mouth at all times (unless they are eating breakfast, lunch, or taking a drink of water). If a student forgets a mask (or their mask breaks during the school day), we have free masks available in the office. School buses also have masks for students. We thank you for your support as we all follow this district and state requirement.
Vaccination Clinic: Next week Multnomah County will be hosting another vaccination clinic at Springwater Trail High School and Sam Barlow High School. The clinic will run after school on Wednesday, October 20th from 3pm - 4:30pm. Please see more information below.
Other questions? Are there things you would like us to discuss or answer in a future Principal Update? Please reach out and let us know!
Stay safe and take care,
Ryan Blaszak

October Spotlight Students
Bea Torres
Grade: 9
Interests: I like reading. I love animals. Spending time with my family. I love science. Overall, just being a good person.
Favorite subject in school: Spanish. It’s kind of part of my heritage and now I finally get to learn how to speak it.
Favorite thing about STHS: How welcoming it is. I can just be myself.
Jon Eakin
Grade: 10
Interests: Listening to music (electronica). Hanging out with my friends. I’ll do some reading if I don’t want to be around anyone. I like studying mythology. I also like board games.
Favorite subject in school: Right now it’s either World Music or English, but it’ll change every year. I really don’t have a favorite subject, but I have a favorite teacher. I’ll always latch on to my favorite teacher and say that’s my favorite subject.
Favorite thing about STHS: It’s a small school and it feels welcoming because of that. You can just go up to someone and say “hi.” It’s also easy to remember people’s names too.
Adrian Diaz Arenas
Grade: 11
Interests: Right now my schedule is pretty busy. For example, after I leave school, at 6:10pm I need to take a math class at Mt. Hood (virtual), and usually after 8:30pm, which is when my class ends, I go for a drive since I’m starting to practice driving so I can get my license. If I had a whole day with no plans, I’d usually tend to hang around with family and friends.
Favorite subject in school: Math. Math is really easy for me since there’s really only one right answer. Comparing English, there’s like millions of answers and it makes me doubt ‘am I right or am I wrong.’ With math, you’re either right or wrong.
Favorite thing about STHS: There’s only 200 students, which makes your mindset be really focused on what you’re doing and not distracted with other things.

COVID-19 Testing Information
Students who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms while at school will have access to a COVID-19 test.
Following are some important details to know about the COVID-19 test:
- The test is VOLUNTARY. Students must have a “COVID-19 Testing Consent Form” on-file before a test can be administered to a student. The form below must be fully completed and signed by a parent or guardian.
- Testing is intended for students who are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
- COVID-19 symptoms include fever of 100.4° F or higher, chills, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and new loss of taste or loss of smell.
- Students are required to administer their own test by swabbing their own nose. A testing administrator will oversee the process and provide verbal instructions to the student.
- Testing will be conducted in the school’s Care Room or a private space.
- Students who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms on-site and are tested (whether positive or negative result) will be sent home. Further instructions will be provided at that time.
- Students who develop COVID-19 symptoms while not at school may not get tested at the school. Testing is only available for students who are already on-site and are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
- Please use this information to decide what is best for your student. If you have more questions, contact our office at 503-261-4600
